RH: "It Gives Me Goosebumps"

RH Clevin Hannah

AfterShocks | 6/23/2022 6:42:00 AM

Paul Suellentrop Byline

Different clothes. Same skills.

Clevin Hannah's role with the AfterShocks is changing, perhaps minimally, this summer. He won't play for the Wichita State alumni team in The Basketball Tournament.

Instead, Hannah will serve as assistant coach to Zach Bush. He will employ the same knowledge and steadying influence that made him valuable as a point guard in the previous two AfterShocks TBT appearances.

"He was a coach on the floor," Bush asaid. "Now it's coach from the sidelines - giving great advice on 'This is how we should practice; sthis is how we should play.' He's done both at a high level."

TBT returns to Koch Arena with an eight-team regional (July 22-25) and a quarterfinal (July 27). The AfterShocks open against We are D3 on July 22 (8 p.m.).

Hannah, who lives in Wichita in the off-season, played last season with MoraBanc Andorra in Spain, his third season with that club. As a free agent in search of his next professional job, avoiding injury is his priority. Coaching keeps him with the AfterShocks and in his beloved Koch Arena, while keeping him healthy for his next team in early August.

"This is a real high-level tournament," Hannah said. "You've got to be a serious team. You can't just come out and put guys together, throw them out there, and hope they play well."

Hannah played for Wichita State from 2008-10 and earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors as a foundational part of the early Gregg Marshall era. When AfterShocks coaches needed someone to organize, lead and make a jump shot, they looked at Hannah. This summer, he will try to convey the need to play smart and play hard to the AfterShocks.

"Clev's earned the respect of everybody," Bush said.

Hannah earned that respect with his 12 years of professional basketball in countries such as France, Spain and Turkey. In the 2021 TBT, he scored five crucial points late in the quarterfinal win over Team Challenge ALS. In 2019, he hit the Elam Ending with two free throws in an 85-76 win over Iowa United to complete a superb floor game that included five points and three assists with no turnovers.

He will work with many of the same former Shockers from previous tournaments - Conner Frankamp, Rashard Kelly, Zach Brown and Markis McDuffie are among those on the AfterShocks roster.

"It's an I.Q. thing," AfterShocks teammate J.T. Durley said after the game in 2019. "Only true point guards know how to manage games. Coach on the floor. Time and score in their head. They know what we need, who needs the ball."

The 2022 AfterShocks will count on Hannah for the same help, this time from the bench. The atmosphere in Koch Arena and the memories of his time as Shocker keep him coming back.

Last summer, Frankamp supplied the lasting memory with his three-pointer to end the quarterfinal game against Team Challenge ALS 69-65 and send the team to Dayton.

In two TBT runs, the AfterShocks and Wichita State fans established Koch Arena as one of the tournament's top locations. This year, Wichita will host eight teams in a regional)], plus the quarterfinal game as part of the event's Championship Week. The winner advances to Dayton for the semifinals.

"It gives me goosebumps every time I come out and play in front of those fans," Hannah said. "Conner's shot was one of my most memorable moments as a Shocker. Seeing him make that shot, seeing all those fans go crazy. Being in front of this crowd again, it's going to be amazing."
