GREENVILLE, N.C. – Lauren Mills and
Addison Barnard each homered twice in a 22-0 run-rule of Memphis in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship Thursday afternoon.
Wichita State (33-15) needed only five innings to dispatch of the Tigers on opening day of the conference tournament. The Shockers pounded out 22 runs on 15 hits, including four home runs. The only thing that slowed down the Shocker offense on Thursday was a 46-minute rain delay in the bottom of the second inning.
Wichita State set an American Athletic Conference Championship record with 22 runs as the Shockers went a combined 15-for-27 at the plate.
The Shockers advance to Friday's semifinals vs. the winner of No. 3 South Florida and No. 6 East Carolina at 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 CT on ESPN+.
In four games vs. Memphis this season, Wichita State outscored the Tigers, 65-4.
Mills led the offensive onslaught with two grand slams and eight RBI. Her two grand slams tied an NCAA single game record, while the eight RBI tied a single game school record. Barnard was responsible for the other two home runs, going 2-for-2 with five RBI and two intentional walks. The American Player of the Year moved her season totals to 32 home runs and 81 RBI. Her 32 home runs are now tied for the third most in NCAA history.
Sydney McKinney entered the tournament five hits away from breaking her own single season hits record of 87. She had five in the game vs. the Tigers, giving her 88 for the season – a new school record. McKinney was a perfect 5-for-5 with an RBI, stolen base and three runs. Her five hits tied a single game school record.
Lainee Brown was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI and
Lauren Lucas was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Erin McDonald (10-8) picked up the win in the circle, allowing just two hits in 3.0 innings.
Caitlin Bingham and
Kenzie Schopfer each pitched an inning in relief to close out the game.
Wichita State pounced on the Tigers from the get-go, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. A leadoff single from McKinney promptly led to the first of two home runs for Barnard. She belted her 31st of the season into the trees in left-center. Wichita State then loaded the bases for Mills who hit a towering grand slam to right-center, putting the Shockers on top, 6-0.
In the bottom of the second, Wichita State effectively put the game away with a nine-run frame. Barnard hit her second two-run home run and Mills added her second grand slam to account for six of the nine runs. A run on a wild pitch followed by a Barnard sac fly and a Lucas RBI single, the Shockers held a 15-0 lead after two innings.
A bases clearing double for Brown opened the third inning, which would then lead to an RBI single from McKinney and an RBI groundout from Lucas.
The final two runs crossed the plate in the fourth on a
Cassie Passwaters pinch-hit sac fly and Memphis throwing error.
