WICHITA, Kan. – A pair of four-run innings in the second and fifth provided all the offense for UCF on Sunday, as the Knights completed a three-game sweep of Wichita State with an 8-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Wichita State (13-27) grabbed a run in the top of the first on an infield single from
Andrew Stewart, but the lead proved to be short lived when UCF (24-16) fired back with four runs in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Wichita State starter
Payton Tolle (2-5) induced a double play grounder that tied the game at 1-1 but also presented an opportunity to limit the damage. Three straight UCF hits followed, as Ryan Taylor singled home a run, Riley Wash doubled down the left field line to bring in another, and Gephry Pena capped the barrage with a run-scoring single to center that made it 4-1.
Four more runs crossed in the top of the fifth, again all with two outs. Noah Orlando singled home two, then one batter later Michael Brooks sliced an opposite field triple to score two more for an 8-1 advantage.
Brock Rodden pulled a run back for Wichita State with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, but the combination of Jacob Marlow and David Litchfield held the Shockers off the board over the final four innings to complete the sweep.
The Shockers got scoreless innings of relief from
Grayson Jones,
Creighton Hansen and
Nate Adler in a losing effort.
Wichita State will be back in action on Tuesday against Oklahoma State at Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm.Â
