WICHITA, Kan. – #8 Oklahoma State scored six times in the top of the fifth to overturn a 5-3 deficit, eventually doubling up Wichita State 12-6 on Tuesday night at Riverfront Stadium.
The decisive inning started with five consecutive Oklahoma State runners, including a pair of RBI doubles from Griffin Doersching and Nolan McClean. After a sacrifice fly made it 7-5, Ian Daugherty hit a two-run homer for his first long ball of the season, extending the Oklahoma State lead to 9-5.
The barrage came against starter
Jace Miner and relievers
Creighton Hansen (0-1) and
Caden Favors, though three of the six runs in the inning were unearned due to a Wichita State error earlier in the frame.
The Shockers (13-28) got a solo home run from
Brock Rodden in the bottom of the eighth, but were otherwise unable to dent the Cowboys bullpen the rest of the way.
Oklahoma State (28-13) scratched across a run in the first on an RBI single from John Bay, and two more in the second when Doersching's fly ball to left center dropped between two Wichita State outfielders for a two-run single. Wichita State exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third, aided by a key Oklahoma State error. With the bases loaded and one out,
Xavier Casserilla bounced a potential double play grounder down to McClean at third base. His throw to second base got lost in the sun, sailing into right field and allowing two runs to score. The next hitter,
Jordan Rogers, tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single, and
Couper Cornblum gave Wichita State the lead with a run-scoring double down the line in left. Rogers then scampered home on a wild pitch for the 5-3 lead.
Reliever Ryan Bogusz (2-0) got the final two outs of the third and then tossed a scoreless fourth inning to earn the win for Oklahoma State.Â
The Cowboys got back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs in the top of the ninth for the game's final margin.
Wichita State goes on the road this weekend for three games in Memphis. First pitch against the Tigers on Friday night is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT.Â
