Barnard Breaks Home Run Record in Rout

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State hit three more home runs in a 10-1 run-rule victory over Memphis Friday night at Wilkins Stadium.

Wichita State (26-13, 8-2) extended its season-best win streak to six in a row and winners of eight straight vs. Memphis.

Addison Barnard entered the game with 22 home runs, tied for the single season mark, which she set just a season ago. No. 23 left the yard in the third inning, setting a new school record with eight regular season games still to go. She finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Neleigh Herring was 2-for-2 with a first inning grand slam. She is now second on the team with 12 homers this season – a career high. Lauren Lucas added a pair of singles and Jessica Garcia went deep for the second straight game.

Caitlin Bingham (11-3) allowed just a single run on six hits in the complete game victory. She walked none and struck out four in her third straight win.

Bingham ran into early trouble in the first inning, allowing a run on three hits. The Tigers' lead would not last long. Wichita State put six runs on the board in the bottom of the first with a bulk of those coming on Herring's grand slam. The grand slam was Herring's first of the season and third career. A Zoe Jones bases loaded hit by pitch and Wylie Glover walk accounted for the other two runs.

After a scoreless second inning, Wichita State added two in the third on Barnard's two-run home run that landed in the street behind the left field wall.

Garcia put the mercy rule into effect in the fourth on a two-run bomb that got up into the wind and carried over the fence in left-center.

Memphis threatened a run in the top of the fifth on a two-out single up the middle, but Lucas fired a bullet to home plate, gunning down the potential run to end the game.
