WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State secured another series win behind five home runs and a 14-3 run-rule of Memphis Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Wichita State (27-13, 9-2) has now won seven straight games, including three straight by way of mercy rule. The Shockers added five more home runs to their season total, bringing it to 90 for the season.
Lauren Mills was responsible for two of the five, going 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBI. She has nine for the season, bringing her one shy of becoming the fifth Shocker with double digit homers.
Addison Barnard homered for the fourth straight game, moving her NCAA leading total to 24 this season. She drove in four runs to go with a double. Barnard now has an NCAA best 63 RBI this season, breaking her own single season school record.
Sydney McKinney paced all hitters with three hits, including a double, an RBI and three runs scored.
Neleigh Herring singled twice and drove in a pair of runs and
Wylie Glover was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs.
Jessica Garcia and
Lainee Brown both homered as well.
Alison Cooper (7-2) went 3.2 innings in the start, allowing three runs – all unearned – on seven hits. She walked three and struck out three.
Erin McDonald threw the final 1.1 innings in relief, facing four batters and striking out two of the four.
For the second straight game Memphis jumped out to an early lead. After a fielding error, the Tigers followed with a walk and RBI single to go up 1-0. But, that lead quickly vanished. Wichita State scored five in the home half behind a Jones RBI single, Herring two-run single and Mills two-run home run.
Wichita State pushed the lead to 8-1 in the second behind Barnard's three-run no-doubter to straightaway center.
The Shockers added three more in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, Mills added her second home run of the day, a solo shot. Back-to-back RBI doubles from McKinney and Barnard increased the margin to 11-1.
After Memphis cut it to 11-3 in the top of the fourth, Wichita State put the finishing touches on the victory behind a two-run blast from Garcia and a solo round-tripper from Brown.
