WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State secured its first series win of the season with a 13-4 run-rule win vs. Tulsa Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
Wichita State (19-10, 2-0) ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on
Sydney McKinney's walk-off two-run home run. It's the seventh time this season Wichita State has won via run-rule.
McKinney entered the weekend as the nation's leader in batting average and hits, and she added to it with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. The All-American shortstop hit the walk-off home run and added three RBI and scored four runs.
Addison Barnard crushed two home runs and drove in six runs to go with a double. It's marked her fourth career multi-home run game and her six RBI set a new career high. The 1-2 punch of McKinney and Barnard combined to go 7-for-9 with three home runs, six runs scored and nine RBI.
Lauren Lucas and
Neleigh Herring both added two hits, including a double for each.
Zoe Jones drove in a pair behind a two-run home run.
Erin McDonald (5-5) picked up the win, throwing a complete game with five strikeouts and just one walk. McDonald allowed all four runs in the second inning – all unearned – and proceeded to allow just three baserunners the rest of the game.
Wichita State grabbed the early lead on Barnard's RBI double, scoring McKinney who led off the first inning with a single.
Trouble struck in the top of the second. McDonald recorded a swinging strikeout for what would have been the third out, but the ball bounced in the dirt and got away from
Jessica Garcia behind the plate. Garcia's throw then bounced of
Neleigh Herring's glove at first, allowing a run to score. Three straight singles then gave Tulsa a 4-1 lead.
The floodgates opened in the bottom of the third when the Shockers scored eight runs, six of them with two outs. Jones started the scoring with a one-out two-run home run to pull Wichita State within a run.
With two outs and Tulsa looking to escape the inning with the lead, an errant throw on a
Wylie Glover grounder kept the inning alive. The Shockers would make them pay. McKinney, the very next batter, gave Wichita State the lead on an RBI single up the middle. With two runners on, Barnard sent a full count pitch over the wall in left-center to make it 9-4.
Barnard's second home run came in the bottom of the fifth to put the Shockers up 11-4.
An inning later, McKinney sent everyone home early with a two-run opposite field shot that just cleared the wall.
