OMAHA, Neb. – Erin McDonald threw a complete-game one-hitter in Wichita State's 3-1 win at Omaha Wednesday evening.
Wichita State won its fourth straight game to improve to 15-7 on the season.
McDonald (3-4) tied a career high with 11 strikeouts in the complete game, allowing just the one hit, a solo home run, and walked three. The senior has now recorded back-to-back stellar outings in the circle after 5.2 innings of shutout relief in the win at Kansas on Monday.
Sydney McKinney pushed her hitting streak to 17 with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, which included a double and a run scored.
Lauren Lucas continued her torrid stretch at the plate with two more hits, including her sixth home run of the season.
Addison Barnard has safely reached base in all 22 games after delivering the go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth.
McDonald had allowed only one baserunner, via walk, through the first 3.2 innings, but left one over the plate and the Mavs made her pay with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.
Wichita State finally broke into the scoring column in the top of the fifth on Barnard's 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot to center. An inning later, Lucas tacked on another run with a solo shot, putting the Shockers up 3-1.
Omaha had its best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the seventh after back-to-back leadoff walks. The Mavericks then loaded the bases with two outs following a hit by pitch, but McDonald's 11th strikeout of the game shut the door.
