OPENING TIPS:
  • Wichita State opens its 116th men's basketball season Monday night against Central Arkansas.
  • Craig Porter Jr. (13 points) and Gus Okafor (11) led a balanced scoring effort in Wednesday's 83-52 exhibition win over Division II Newman University.
  • This is the second meeting all-time between WSU and UCA. The other came three years ago (Dec. 5, 2019). WSU forced 30 turnovers on 16 steals in a 95-69 romp.
  • Since 1992, WSU teams are 27-2 in season openers.
  • Isaac Brown is 2-0 in openers with both wins coming against eventual NCAA tournament teams: Oral Roberts (2021 Sweet 16) and Jacksonville State (2022).
  • The Shockers open at home for the 19th straight year. They've won 25 of their last 26 home openers with the lone loss coming to LA Tech in 2018. They're 58-8 at the Roundhouse and 97-18 all-time.
  • As many as 12 players could make their Shocker debuts on Monday, which would be a program record. A potential 13th (Colby Rogers) is awaiting word on an NCAA transfer waiver. The current mark for most Shocker debuts is nine, set during the aforementioned 2018 opener and also in 1979 when freshmen bookends Cliff Levingston and Antoine Carr saw their first action.
  • The 1946-47 Shockers hold the mark for most total debuts in one season (12), followed by the 1951-52 (11 including Cleo Littleton) and 2018-19 squads (10).
  • The Shockers will lean on Porter, a fifth-year senior point guard who led last year's team in assists (3.6), steals (1.6) and blocks (1.1). He and sophomore big man Kenny Pohto are the only holdovers from the 2021-22 active roster. Brown must otherwise replace over 80 percent of the team's points and minutes.
  • All eight of WSU's scholarship newcomers are transfers. Seven have previous D-I experience.
  • In lieu of a second exhibition, WSU played a closed-door scrimmage with Missouri State on Saturday, Oct. 29.
  • WSU was picked eighth out of 11 teams in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll.
  • KenPom ranks the Shockers 83rd nationally in its preseason metric (74th best defense and 104th on offense).
  • UCA was picked 11 in the ASUN coaches poll and ranks 332nd out of 363 teams by KenPom.
  • The Bears have a veteran group led by ASUN freshman of the year Camren Hunter. Senior forward Eddy Kayoulou has scored over 1,000 points in a UCA uniform.

CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT:
  • The challenge of bringing in 12 newcomers extends beyond the playbook. Isaac Brown spent the summer working to create chemistry and culture within his new roster.
  • The team met weekly this summer for a meal and group discussion, diving into five H's – heritage, hero, highlight, heartbreak and hope.
  • Bonding activities ranged from the familiar (pickleball, bowling and dinners) to the peculiar, such as a workout at a local boxing gym or a trip to McConnell Air Force Base to participate in a battlefield training exercise.

16 PIECES OF FLAIR:
  • Fans may notice a new addition to Wichita State men's basketball uniforms in 2022-23. In an effort to strengthen ties with the university community, student-athletes are sporting jersey patches representing the academic college in which their major resides.

LAST TIME OUT:
Nov. 2 | WSU 83, Newman 52 (Exhibition)
  • Craig Porter Jr. scored 13 points and WSU used a pair of extended scoring runs to take its exhibition opener.
  • Reserves Jalen Ricks, Jaron Pierre, Shammah Scott, Isaac Abidde and James Rojas keyed a 17-0 run that turned an 11-8 deficit into a comfortable lead.
  • The margin ballooned to 37 points late in the second half after another 20-0 Shocker push, during which the visitors missed 21 straight shots.
  • All 14 Shockers who dressed saw action.
  • Porter tallied 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go with five rebounds and four assists, and Gus Okafor joined him in double-figures with 11 points.
  • 7-footer Quincy Ballard packed seven points, seven boards, three blocks and a pair of steals into 12 minutes, while Shammah Scott handed out five assists.
  • Latik Murphy scored a game-high 14 points to lead Division II Newman.
  • WSU forced 25 turnovers while committing just 12.
  • The Shockers won their 28th consecutive preseason exhibition going back to 2001. They're 25-0 in such games since Charles Koch Arena's 2003 renovation.

SCOUTING UCA:
  • The Bears (11-20, 7-9) are picked 11th in the Atlantic Sun preseason poll on the heels of last year's sixth-place finish.
  • UCA was one of college basketball's fastest teams last season, ranking 12th nationally in possessions-per-game according to KenPom.com. Expect that trend to continue.
  • The Bears return four players who started at least 12 games last season, including reigning freshman of the year and preseason All-ASUN pick Camren Hunter. The 6-3 sophomore guard averaged a team-high 14.1 points last season to go with 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals.
  • 6-2 junior Collin Cooper (9.9 ppg) made a team-high 67 threes on 36.6% accuracy.
  • 6-7 wing Eddy Kayoulou (11.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg) is in his fifth season with the program and has scored over 1,000 career points.
  • UCA is in its second year as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference after a 15-year run in the Southland Conference. The Bears have been competing in Division I since the 2006-07 season.
  • Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen played collegiately at UCA (1983-87). He arrived as a 6-foot-1 walk-on but grew 6-8 and developed into a two-time NAIA All-American. Pippen's No. 33 jersey has been retired and UCA's home court is named in his honor.

THE SERIES WITH UCA:
  • WSU won the only other series meeting with UCA three years ago (Dec. 5, 2019 in Wichita) by a score of 95-69.
  • 10 different Shockers combined for 16 steals – WSU's highest total against a D-I opponent in the shot clock era.
  • WSU scored 39 points off of 30 UCA turnovers and outscored the visitiors 17-1 on second chance opportunities.
  • WSU used runs of 11-0 and 10-0 to build a 30-point lead near the under-4:00 timeout of the first half and took a 53-28 edge into the locker room.
  • Tyson Etienne made his first career start and finished with 13 points.
  • Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler is the only Shocker holdover from that game.
  • Four UCA players are still around, most notably forward Eddy Kayouloud, who scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting and snagged eight rebounds.

MATCHUP MASHUP:
  • Per RealGM, there are currently 18 Swedes playing basketball at the Division I level, and three of them will be in the house Monday night: WSU's Kenny Pohto and UCA's Ibbe Klintman and Johan Crawford.
  • Pohto and Klintman were both members of the U20 Swedish national team that won the 2021 Nordic Cup.
  • Pohto also spent a year (2020-21) with UCA's Elias Cato at Sunrise Christian Academy.
  • UCA head coach Anthony Boone faced the Shockers four times as a player at Ole Miss in the 1990s.
  • Only two teams allowed more points than UCA last year (81.1 ppg): Omaha (83.5 ppg) and Mississippi Valley State (83.0). WSU will face MVSU on Dec. 13.
  • WSU has never played a game on Nov. 7. It's the third-earliest regular season game in program history, trailing only the 2019 and 2018 openers, which were played on Nov. 5 and 6 respectively.

OPENING STATEMENTS:
  • WSU has won just under three-quarters of its season-openers all-time (86-29, .748) and over 80% (62-15, .805) in the modern era.
  • WSU is 18-1 in home openers since Charles Koch Arena's 2003 renovation. The lone loss came in 2018 to Louisiana Tech.
  • WSU is starting its 67th season at the Roundhouse (1955-Pr.) Shocker teams have lost just eight home openers in that span (58-8, .879).
  • 40 seasons ago (Dec. 1, 1972), Antoine Carr set the school record for most points by a freshman in his Shocker debut (19 points). He dunked five times in the first half of a 76-61 win over Northern Michigan.
  • WSU's highest-scoring varsity debut came Dec. 1, 1972 at Oregon State when Bobby Wilson – a transfer from Northeastern (Colo.) Junior College – put up 29 points. Wilson went on to play parts of four NBA seasons with the Bulls, Celtics and Pacers.
  • Isaac Brown is 2-0 in season openers with both wins coming against eventual NCAA tournament teams Oral Roberts (2021 Sweet 16) and Jacksonville State (2022).
  • A year ago, Tyson Etienne got the season off to a memorable start, hitting a three-pointer from the edge of the WuShock logo at center court with 2.2 seconds remaining to give WSU a 60-57 win over Jacksonville State.
  • The 2020 opener was dramatic, as well. Etienne scored 21 of his team-high 26 points after halftime and the Shockers rallied from a nine-point deficit with 10:48 to play to defeat Oral Roberts, 85-80. Eventual NCAA scoring champ Max Abmas put up 28 points and eight assists for the Golden Eagles.
  • Five Shockers have topped 30 points in a season opener, most recently Jason Perez who opened up his senior season with 30 against McNeese on Nov. 19, 1999. The other four happened in a five-year span between 1963 and 1967. Dave Stallworth owns the top-2 marks with 36 against Wyoming (Nov. 30, 1963) and 37 against Long Beach State (Dec. 5, 1964).

USELESS INFO:
  • WSU has not played a basketball game on a Monday since November, 2017. That year they did it in back-to-back weeks, defeating College of Charleston at home and California the following Monday in the Maui Invitational.
  • The Shockers have won eight-straight Monday games going back a dozen years. Their last Monday loss came to UConn (also in Maui) on Nov. 22, 2010.

NON-CONFERENCE NOTABLES:
  • Four of the 12 games are against first-time foes. The Shockers have never faced Grand Canyon, Longwood, Mississippi Valley State and Richmond.
  • The Shockers' five road or neutral site games are all against teams that finished inside the top-100 in last year's NCAA NET Rankings.
  • Three Shocker non-conference opponents are picked to win their respective leagues: Grand Canyon (WAC), Longwood (Big South) and Texas Southern (SWAC).
  • WSU looks to continue a run of seven-straight non-conference road wins that dates back to the 2019 postseason when it travels to Richmond (Nov. 17) and Kansas State (Dec. 3). Six of the wins have come against major conference foes: Clemson (ACC), Indiana (Big Ten), Mizzou (SEC), Ole Miss (SEC) and twice at Oklahoma State (Big 12).

PORTER CARRIES THE LOAD:
  • Craig Porter Jr. scored a team-high 13 points in the exhibition win over Newman. While it doesn't officially count toward his totals, it's still a notable achievement.
  • Porter was leading scorer just one time in his first two seasons as a Shocker (spanning 44 games). In last February's double-OT thriller against Houston he put up 17 points, matching Ricky Council IV for high honors.
  • Expect more scoring from Porter in 2022-23. The fifth-year senior excels at setting the table for his teammates but will be asked to take on more of the load in his final go-around.
  • Porter has the capacity, as evidenced by the UH game and an 11-point first half against Arizona last year.
  • Per KenPom, Porter's shot percentage (16.1%) was second lowest among WSU regulars last year, but he boasted the team's third-highest offensive efficiency (101.8), behind Council and Kenny Pohto (112.1).

2021-22 LEFTOVERS:
  • WSU shot a school-record 75.3% from the foul line in 2021-22, edging out the 2011-12 squad (.748). Shocker players combined to make at least 80 percent of their attempts in 11 of the 28 games.
  • The 2021-22 Shocker were:
    • ... 13-3 when opponent assists < or="">
    • ... 2-10 when opponent assists > turnovers.
    • ... 10-4 when outshooting their foe (19-4 IB era).
    • ... 9-1 when scoring 70+ in regulation (21-1 IB era).
    • ... 8-0 when holding their opponent under 60 points.
    • ... 7-13 when surrendering 60+ points.

CRAIG PORTER: RIM PROTECTOR:
  • More than 200 Division I players averaged at least a block-per-game last year, but the 6-foot-2 Craig Porter Jr. was the shortest of them all.
  • Porter blocked at least one shot in 21 of his 25 games, including a run of 11 straight that was the longest by a Shocker guard in the 42 years that WSU has tracked game-by-game totals.
  • Porter carries a six-game block streak into 2022-23.

A SHOCKER WIN WOULD….
... Make them 1-0 for the fourth-straight year.
... Make them 28-2 in season openers over the last three decades.
... Give them wins in 26 of their last 27 home openers.
... Make them 2-0 against UCA.

A SHOCKERS LOSS WOULD...
... Make them 0-1 for the first time since 2018-19 and for just third time in the last three decades.
... Make them 1-1 all-time vs. UCA.
... Be less good than a win.
