WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State shot a season-low 30 percent from the floor and misfired on 15-of-20 attempts from three-point range, as Memphis held off a late comeback attempt, 50-49, Sunday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Wichita State (10-6, 1-2) forced 25 turnovers, but couldn't make up for a poor shooting day and being outrebounded by 13 – a season worst. The Shockers' 49 points also marked a season low.
Mariah McCully was the lone Shocker in double figures with a team-high 13 points, but was just 5-of-16 from the floor.
Jane Asinde grabbed 10 rebounds, just missing a double-double with nine points.
McCully scored the team's first six points of the game, but the rest of the team was a combined 0-of-8 from the floor, as Memphis grabbed an early 12-6 lead. The Tigers would hold a lead for more than half of the opening period, including a 15-13 margin after 10 minutes.
An Asinde basket quickly tied the game to begin the second quarter, but Memphis would take it right back and lead the remainder of the quarter. The Tigers led by as many as seven at the 2:04 mark, but a
Carla Bremaud trey made it 31-27 at the half.
Asinde led Wichita State with nine first half points, followed by McCully with seven. Wichita State shot just 31 percent from the field and was outrebounded by seven in the opening 20 minutes.
The third quarter featured more offensive struggles for the Shockers. Memphis pushed the lead back to eight behind a scoring drought of 4:26 for Wichita State. A
Trajata Colbert hook shot finally ended the cold spell.
Both teams combined for only 20 points in the frame, as Memphis carried a 42-36 lead into the fourth.
Wichita State held Memphis to just eight points in the final quarter, but it was too little too late. The Tigers took a 50-43 with 2:29 remaining and wouldn't score again, as the Shocker defense locked in.
The Shockers scored the game's final six points courtesy of a
DJ McCarty coast-to-coast layup, McCully fast break score and an
Asia Strong offensive rebound putback. Strong's putback made it a one-point game, but only 3.4 seconds left on the clock. Wichita State couldn't come up with a turnover, as time expired, closing the book on a tough afternoon.
