NEW ORLEANS – Behind a 28-13 third quarter, Tulane defeated Wichita State, 67-52, Saturday afternoon in Devlin Fieldhouse.
Wichita State (10-7, 1-3) held a one-point halftime lead, but the second half belonged to the Green Wave.
DJ McCarty put up a team-high 14 points and
Jane Asinde added 10 points and nine rebounds in a losing effort. Wichita State was without point guard
Seraphine Bastin and
Asia Strong was held scoreless for the first time this season.
Wichita State converted on only 35 percent of its attempts, including 3-of-11 from beyond the arc and turned the ball over 22 times. Those 22 turnovers led to 22 points on the other end for Tulane.
Tulane finished the game shooting 41 percent overall despite missing 16-of-20 attempts from long range. Dynah Jones scored a game-high 17 points for Tulane followed by 16 for Arsula Clark.
Wichita State began the game on a 15-4 run behind a dominant start from Colbert. Colbert tallied seven points and six rebounds, five of them on the offensive end, in the game's first five-plus minutes.
Tulane answered back with seven unanswered, but a McCully three-pointer from the left wing made it 18-10 after 10 minutes of action.
The second quarter was essentially flipped in Tulane's favor, as the Green Wave outscored the Shockers 18-11. Tulane grabbed its first lead with 30 seconds on the clock following a three-point play from Arsula Clark. That lead lasted all of about 28 seconds as
DJ McCarty knocked down a contested three-pointer as time expired, giving the Shockers a 29-28 halftime lead.
McCarty's nine first half points led all scorers, as Wichita State shot just 35 percent from the field in the half. The defense held Tulane to 0-of-8 from beyond the arc and forced 11 turnovers. It didn't help that the Shockers committed 12 turnovers of their own – nine in the second quarter alone.
Out of the locker room, Tulane opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run to grab its largest lead to that point, 39-31. The lead would swell to as many as 15 in the period.
The fourth quarter was not a banner period for either team, as Wichita State was just 3-of-7 from the floor, while Tulane as 4-of-18. The Green Wave outscored the Shockers by just one in the final 10 minutes, 11-10.
