FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Lucas Scheufler and Brock Polhill both staked top-20 finishes to lead the Wichita State men's golf team at Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational.
 
Heavy north winds wreaked havoc on Monday's first and second round scores at Fort Collins Country Club. The Shockers tied for sixth out of 16 schools despite carding their highest team total (318-307-299—924, +84) since October, 2017.
 
Scheufler (77-76-74—227, +17) tied for 12th-place out of 89 golfers and Brock Polhill (76-78-75—229, +19) grabbed a share of 16th.
 
After cracking the top-20 just two times in his first three seasons as a Shocker, Polhill has done so in back-to-back weeks to open up the 2021-22 campaign.
 
Scheufler, a freshman from Andover, is also out to promising start after tying for 21st last week in his collegiate debut.
 
Tuesday's weather offered a slight reprieve. The winds subsided and temperatures climbed into the low 70s.
 
Host Colorado State capitalized, shooting 5-under-par over the final round to win its home tournament for the seventh consecutive year after starting the day in fifth place. Even with that late surge, the Rams 54-hole (901) was the highest ever by a winning team at the Ram Masters, topping the old mark by 42 strokes.
 
Dawson Lewis (86-76-74—236, +26) and Adam Balatka (83-77-76—236, +26) both climbed the leaderboard after slow starts to finish in a tie for 37th, while Max Wojchiechowski (82-85-81—248, +38) ended with a share of 78th.
 
Lewis accounted for six of WSU's 26 birdies over the three rounds.
 
The Shockers return to Rocky Mountains next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
