WSU Outlasts Green Wave

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State came up with several big plays down the stretch to fend off Tulane on Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena, 25-22, 25-23, 26-24.

The Shockers (15-8, 9-5) trailed early in the third set 10-4, and later 24-23 after an attack error. Facing set point, Natalie Foster guided home a kill to keep WSU alive, and Tulane's Michelle Urquhart committed an attack error of her own to put the Shockers in front 25-24. Morgan Weber sealed the match for Wichita State on the subsequent point, tipping over the block for her fifth kill.

WSU dominated in serve and pass all afternoon, getting seven aces to six errors while Tulane (15-11, 8-6) had nine serve miscues and only two aces. Additionally, the Green Wave had seven reception errors to the Shockers two.

The Shockers stormed out of the gates to open the match, surging to a quick 6-2 edge in the first set. Tulane gradually chipped away, eventually taking their first lead at 16-15. The two sides traded points to reach 19-19, but WSU put together a mini 5-0 run to seize control. Weber put down a kill, and then back-to-back errors from Chelsea Harvey and Kayla Dinkins preceded kills from Kayce Litzau and Morgan Stout. Three points later, Stout added another putaway to clinch the first. The Shockers won despite hitting .062 in the set.

The second set saw WSU find an offensive rhythm, hitting a sterling .353 with six kills from Brylee Kelly, who finished with a match-high 11. WSU appeared to have the set wrapped up at 24-19, but the Green Wave rapped out four quick points to pull within 24-23. Stout once again delivered the big play, hammering home a kill on the slide to put the Shockers ahead two sets to none.

Stout finished with eight kills, hitting .500, while Sophia Rohling put together another strong performance with nine kills on only 20 swings. Weber led the Shockers with 13 digs, and Litzau distributed 35 assists.

Wichita State has a quick turnaround next week, hosting Tulsa on Wednesday to continue the homestand. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
