WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State claimed another thrilling five-set match at Charles Koch Arena on Wednesday night, dominating the first two sets and then fending off Tulsa in the fifth to win 25-14, 25-14, 22-25, 23-25, 16-14.
Â
Morgan Stout authored a career performance, setting new personal bests with 13 kills and 11 blocks, including two solos. The 11 rejections tie for the second-most in a five-set match in the rally scoring era of Shocker volleyball.
Â
As a team, Wichita State had 18 blocks, three more than their previous high in a match this season.
Â
The Shockers (16-8, 10-5) put together two of their most complete sets of the season to start the night, rolling to consecutive 25-14 wins. In the first, WSU had a sideout percentage of 85%, their highest in any single set this season, hitting .433 thanks to three kills apiece from four different players.
Â
The script was much the same in set two, with a 6-0 run capping off an impressive defensive effort that held Tulsa (12-12, 7-8) to a negative .061 attack percentage.
Â
The Golden Hurricane responded with a wire-to-wire win in the third set, thanks in large part to seven kills from Kayley Cassaday, who finished with a match-high 21. WSU at one point cut the lead to 19-18, but could never get over the hump as Tulsa fended off a potential sweep.
Â
Cassaday piled up seven more kills in the fourth, helping Tulsa break a 17-17 tie late in the set. The Golden Hurricane had set point at 24-21, but a
Brylee Kelly kill and a Tulsa attack error trimmed the lead to one before Cassaday delivered the winner.
Â
In the fifth, Tulsa snagged a quick 7-5 lead before the Shockers found their footing. Two quick kills from
Morgan Weber tied the score, and four points later Kelly gave the Shockers a 10-9 lead with a solo block. The critical sequence came next, as
Kayce Litzau won two jousts at the next to extend the advantage to 12-9 and force a Tulsa timeout. WSU got to 14-12 on a Golden Hurricane service error, but Tulsa scored the next two points to stay alive.
Natalie Foster sliced a kill off the top of the tape to present another match point, and
Sophia Rohling followed with the winning kill after a furious rally.
Â
Kelly led the Shockers with 14 kills, but Rohling added 13 and Weber had 12 as part of a balanced offensive effort. Litzau racked up 50 more assists, and both Weber (23) and
Lily Liekweg (20) cracked 20 digs on the night.
Â
The Shockers improved to 7-2 on the season in five-set matches.
Â
Wichita State wraps up the homestand on Friday night against Temple. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 PM and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
