WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State got 18 kills from
Brylee Kelly and rolled to a 25-15, 25-19, 27-25 win over Temple on Friday night at Koch Arena.
Â
Kelly's 18 putaways were the most by a Shocker in a three-set match this season, breaking her own record of 16 against Missouri State on August 27. Her nine kills in the second set alone tied the WSU single-set high this season, equaled only in the third set against SMU on October 10. Kelly's first kill of the night was also the 500th in her career.
Â
The Shockers (17-8, 11-5) held Temple to an .098 hitting percentage, recording eight blocks and 62 digs, led by 17 from
Lily Liekweg.
Morgan Stout followed up her 11 blocks from Wednesday with five more, and four other Shockers had multiple block assists.
Â
It was a comfortable first set for WSU, using a 6-0 run that featured five Temple attack errors to stretch the lead to 19-10. Kills from
Natalie Foster and
Sophia Rohling capped off the set in which the Shockers had a sideout percentage of 62%.
Â
Kelly's nine kills highlighted the second set, though
Morgan Weber impressed on both sides of the ball with four kills and five digs. Once again the Shockers gradually built the lead in the middle stages, rattling off four quick points after the Owls (5-21, 1-14) briefly pulled within 13-11. A block from Weber and Foster put Temple away to give the Shockers a two-sets-to-none lead.
Â
The third set proved to be the most challenging, thanks in large part to a 6-0 Temple run that turned a 20-16 WSU lead into a 22-20 deficit. The Shockers later faced set point at 24-22, but got two straight kills from Foster to even the score. After a Taylor Davenport kill put Temple in front 25-24,
Sophie Childs delivered a big swing to bring WSU even. On the subsequent point, Davenport was called for a lift, giving the Shockers match point. Kelly's serve was sent down the left sideline and initially called out, but a Wichita State challenge saw the call reversed, giving Kelly an ace and the Shockers a sweep.
Â
The Shockers completed the season sweep against Temple, and finished the homestand 3-1.
Â
Wichita State begins their final road trip of the regular season next Friday at Cincinnati. First serve is scheduled for 5:30 PM and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
