Shockers Can’t Fend Off Mustang Rally

WICHITA, Kan. – SMU rallied from a 2-0 deficit to knock off Wichita State 19-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-13, 15-12 on Wednesday night at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers (18-10, 12-7) largely dominated the first two sets, hitting .256 and .406, respectively, while holding SMU to hitting percentages of .176 and .098. WSU never trailed in the opening set, getting five kills from Natalie Foster en route to the convincing win. In the second set, SMU scored five of the first seven, but the Shockers fired off a 6-1 run in the middle stages of the set to take control at 15-10. The Mustangs closed within three points several times down the stretch but would get no closer, as the Shockers scored four straight points to seal the set.

WSU had a chance at the sweep in set three, leading 19-15 after an ace from Lily Liekweg. But the Mustangs responded, surging back to take five of the next six points and draw even at 20-20. The two teams traded points to reach 23-23, but a Jadyn Bauss kill and a Shocker attack error clinched the set for SMU.

Bauss led SMU with a season and match-high 19 kills on 51 swings.

The fourth set was all SMU, as the Mustangs took a quick 6-1 lead and never looked back. SMU hit a blistering .519 in the set, getting four or more kills from three different hitters. In the fifth, the Shockers trailed early at 5-2, but clawed back to even the score at 8-8 after a kill from Morgan Stout. The Mustangs gradually stretched the lead back to four at 13-9, and despite three straight Shocker points, eventually clinched the match on two kills from Hannah Jacobs.

Foster paced the Shockers with 17 kills, hitting .483 out of the middle, while Morgan Weber produced a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Kayce Litzau had 52 assists, and Liekweg racked up 22 digs.

The Shockers wrap up the regular season on Friday afternoon against Memphis at Charles Koch Arena, first serve is scheduled for 12:00 PM and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
