Dellien Set to Compete at Davis Cup

3/5/2020 2:13:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – Senior All-American Murkel Dellien is slated to play for his home country Bolivia as they take on the Dominican Republic in the Davis Cup, Friday March 6 and Saturday March 7, at the Club De Tenis Santa Cruz in Bolivia.

The Davis Cup is a premier international tennis tournament that is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) where teams from around the world compete in a knock-out format. Matches are played in a team vs. team format much similar to the ITA college format that Dellien is used to playing in with the Wichita State men's tennis team. Organizers of the tournament often refer to it as the "World Cup of Tennis".

Dellien will be competing alongside his brother Hugo Dellien, who burst on to the world tennis stage in 2019 achieving a singles ranking of No. 74 in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings. Last year Hugo advanced to the second round of the US Open and French Open.

"It is a pleasure to be a part of the team and it means even more for me to share it with him (Hugo Dellien). It is like a dream come true." Dellien said. "To be honest, he is my biggest idol in the sport, and it means a bit more since he is my brother."

Bolivia will be picking up a great asset in Dellien as he has had his own share of success here at Wichita State. Over his college career, Dellien has gone 57-31 in singles, and 51-32 in doubles. In 2018, he became the first Shocker since 1993 to reach the ITA Central Regional semifinals. Last season he was named All-AAC in doubles on his way to an elite eight finish at the NCAA Doubles Championship. This historic run led to him being named an NCAA Doubles All-American.
