Â
SAN MARCOS, Texas - Wichita State softball dropped its first game against host Texas State (6-2), 5-3, and their second matchup in two days against UTSA, 2-0, on the second day of the Bobcat Classic on Saturday.
Â
Game 1 at Texas State
Caitlin Bingham (1-0, 2.86 ERA) got the start versus Texas State and pitched five full innings. The junior gave up five hits and three earned runs, one of them coming off a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
Â
Bailey Lange (2-3, 5.62 ERA) came in to pitch in the sixth inning after serving as the designated player for the majority of the game. Lange was credited with the loss after giving up two runs on three hits in her inning of relief after the Shockers tied the game in the top of the sixth.
Â
The Shocker offense was quiet for the first five innings thanks in part to a strong outing from Bobcat freshman Tori McCann. In the sixth inning, Wichita State got the bases loaded with two outs and proceeded to force three straight walks to bring three across the plate.
Madison Perrigan hit a double in the seventh inning, but the tying run on the plate struck out twice to end the ballgame.
Â
Game 2 vs. UTSA
The start for the second game went to junior right-hander
Erin McDonald (2-2). The game was defined by a pitching duel between McDonald and Roadrunner pitcher Erika Cortez. Both sides were scoreless headed into the fifth inning, but UTSA hit a sacrifice fly and scored a runner off a bases loaded HBP to score the only two runs of the contest.
Â
Opportunities to score were limited in the game for the Shockers. The team only had four hits on the night and no player advanced past second base. The best chance of the night came on the final at bat with Lange on second after hitting a double.
Lauren Mills entered the game to pinch hit, but she struck out swinging towards the fences to end the night.
Â
The contest also featured the ejection of UTSA head coach Michelle Cheatham and center fielder Celeste Loughman as a result of a reckless slide into third base.
