WICHITA—
The Wichita State men's and women's cross country teams claimed the men's and women's team and individual titles to sweep the JK Gold Classic on Saturday morning.

Head cross country coach Kirk Hunter said he thought his teams looked good at first glance.

"I thought they packed up well," Hunter said. "They helped each other out, and those were our main goals. They did it in a fashion that paid off.

"I'm excited to sit down and look closer at the details of the race."

Winny Koskei kicked off her season with victory, completing the 4K race in 13:48.5 She is following a 2018 season that saw her win the AAC title and finish the season as an All-American.

The rest of the women's top five finished within the top 10, including the top four overall finishers. Four-time JK Gold champion Rebekah Topham finished runner-up, Yazmine Wright finished third and Rita Schnacker took fourth place.

Wichita State won the meet with a score of 18 points, beating second-place Missouri State by 21 points.

The victory marks the women's fourth JK Gold title in the past five years.

On the men's side, Ben Flowers won the individual title, crossing the line with a time of 18:38.2.

The men's team was one place from perfection as they put six in the top eight, including four of the top five. With the team victory, the Wichita State men have now won seven of the past eight JK Gold Classic team titles.

Jed Helker, Cory Landon and Adam Moore took spots three through five. The trio finished within three seconds of each other.

"Ben Flowers is a great competitor, that's all there is to it," Hunter said. "I think you could take any one of those top six guys and any of those guys could be the top guy. That's the quality of depth we have right now."

The next race for Wichita State is Sept. 27 at the Emporia State Invitational. The Shockers also run Sept. 28 against a field of ranked teams at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.

"Going up against those ranked teams up in Oregon will be a good test to see where we're really at," Hunter said. "We've got to stay healthy. We've got two really good teams if we can stay healthy."
