New Low Nets High Finish for WSU's Lewis

9/10/2019 6:11:00 PM

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –  Something about the course at Guyan Golf & Country Club agrees with Wichita State's Dawson Lewis.

Lewis -- a sophomore from Flower Mound, Texas -- closed out his best 54-hole score as a Shocker on Tuesday to secure a top-20 individual finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.

Lewis' raw tally (68-72-71 -- 211) shaved 11 strokes off his previous 54-hole low, set last March at the GCU Invitational (222). He was 2-under-par for the tournament and ended in a tie for 20th.

His only loftier finish came in last year's Joe Feaganes when he tied for 14th. In all, Lewis has shot par-or-better in four of his five rounds at Guyan, including Monday's 3-under, 68 performance (a career 18-hole low).

In Tuesday morning's final round, Lewis gained ground by holding steady. Four birdies helped cancel out four bogies, and an even-par, 71 was enough to net him four spots on the leaderboard after starting the day in 24th.

Tuesday was less kind to the Shockers collectively. After navigating the first two rounds at 1-under-par, WSU was +13 over the final 18 holes and slipped two notches to 11th-place in the final team standings.

Zac Owens (72-66-74 – 212) ended the tournament at 1-under-par but sank from 13th into a tie for 34th after a final-round 74.

Joe Bultman (70-74-77 – 221), Grayson Wallace (76-71-75 – 222) and Lake Leroux (74-76-77 – 227) checked in 66th, 69th and 80th respectively out of 96 individuals.

Dayton's Kyle Schmidt was individual medalist at -11, but VCU golfers staked three of the top six spots on the leaderboard to edge the Flyers for the team title by three strokes.

UP NEXT:
The Shockers return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo.
