This past week the Wichita State Cheer Team and Wu traveled to Estes Park, Colo. to participate at the final Universal Cheerleaders Association College Cheer Camp. During the days there they worked on perfecting their sidelines, band dances and timeout routine with UCA instructors from around the country.
Each day the team worked on pyramids, basket tosses, stunts and game planning for Shocker Game Day. Every evening there were evaluations on the skills and routines the team had put together, every evaluation resulted in a Blue Superior Ribbon, the highest possible honor for evaluations. Rookie cheerleader, Teagan liked the evaluation portion of the day because "it showed an outside perspective of our performance that gave us a baseline of what to work on for the final day competitions. We are then able to take those critiques home to help give Shocker Nation the atmosphere they deserve at games."
During this time Wu had the opportunity to work with other mascots and his own instructor on how to be the best mascot he can be. The UCA instructor made the mascots in attendance work on everything from pantomiming emotions to putting together successful skits. On the final day, Wu was awarded the Most Improved Mascot at camp.
The cheer team ended camp on a high note taking home top honors in every competition while going against several D1 Power 5 Schools. Those awards include:
1st place Band Dance
1st place Sideline
2nd place Timeout Routine
1st place Overall Game Day
Two other awards given to the cheer team were The Leadership Award, which is voted on by the other teams in attendance, and the Most Collegiate Award, which is the most prestigious one presented. This honor is voted on by the staff for a team they believe upholds their traditions as well as being strong ambassadors for the university.
First year cheer coach,
Kevin Keith, is excited for what these past days mean for the team going forward. "Overall I think camp was a huge success. It really helped clean up our game day presentation as well as giving us the opportunity to see how we measure up to other teams across the country. Our team had a great time and really improved on technique for the skills which will help us going into the school year. "
