Loren Hibbs, Wichita State baseball assistant athletic director for operations and player development, talks about his first month on the job. Hibbs, from Wellington, played outfield for the Shockers from 1982-84 and served as assistant coach from 1985-1992.
He worked as head coach at Charlotte from 1993-2019 before returning to Wichita State to work for coach
Eric Wedge.
On his return to Wichita State:
"I've known Eric since was 17 years old. I was involved in recruiting him here to Wichita State. When he decided he wanted to come back here and coach, as the head coach, the conversations continued and we got a point where it made sense for me to maybe come back and help him, get this thing going back in the right direction. It just fell into place the right way."
On his role helping the coaching staff:
"The initial part of it is to help Eric with the transition from professional baseball to college baseball. He's going to be a quick learner. All the rules that there are at this level, the different practice time limits, the recruiting – all those things that I've been doing for 35 years, 27 as a head coach. Eric talks a lot about the standard and raising the standard around here, whether it be with facilities, whether it be with practice plan, whether it be with recruiting, whether it be with scheduling . . ."
On Wichita State's recruiting philosophy:
"We're not going to over-recruit. We're not going to sign 25, 30 guys every signing period. We're going to try to focus in on the guys we want and the guys we need to fill the holes that we have."
On scheduling:
"We're going to probably end up playing Nebraska and Creighton home and home. We're going to continue to play Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State. Keep those traditional rivalries alive. Oral Roberts."
