Tulane Takes Two from Shockers Saturday

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane University Green Wave swept the Wichita State University baseball team in a doubleheader Saturday, April 6, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, winning game one, 12-6, before taking the nightcap, 8-4.  
 
Wichita State (18-14, 3-3 American), which had its season-long seven-game winning streak snapped after the game one setback, is scheduled to open an eight-game homestand at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field, Wednesday, April 10, against Oklahoma State.
 
Game One: Tulane 12, Wichita State 6
In the opening game of the day, Luke Ritter went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Hunter Gibson drove in three runs on a three-run homer – his second of the season, leading the Shockers at the plate.
 
Right-hander Ryan Stuempfig (1-1) suffered the loss on the mound for WSU after allowing three earned runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk in 1 1/3 innings.
 
Kody Hoese led Tulane (21-11, 4-2 American) in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with his team and American-high 16th home run of the season, going along with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Kobi Owen also homered in the contest and had two RBIs.
 
Green wave reliever Krishna Raj (3-0) earned the victory after allowing one earned run on four hits with a strikeout and no walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.
 
Game Two: Tulane 8, Wichita State 4
In the nightcap and series finale, Ritter went 2-for-4 with his team-best seventh homer of 2019 – a solo shot in the top of the first inning, while Paxton Wallace and David VanVooren each tallied a double, pacing the Shockers offensively.
 
Wichita State starter Clayton McGinness (3-3) took the loss after surrendering five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings.
 
Hudson Haskin led the Green Wave at the plate in game two, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
 
Right-hander Chase Solesky (3-2) picked up the victory after giving up four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings. Brendan Cellucci secured his second save of the season after throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts and a walk.
