WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State University baseball team split a pair of games with the UCF Knights at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field, Saturday, April 20, falling in game one, 11-3, before winning game two, 6-4. The first contest was resumed Saturday morning in the seventh inning after being suspended Friday evening.

With the victory in game two, the Shockers (20-19, 5-7 American) secured the series win over the Knights (23-17, 5-10 American).

In game one, the Shockers were paced by freshman designated hitter Jack Sigrist, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jordan Boyer picked up two RBIs in the contest. In addition, Ross Cadena tallied two hits in the first game.

Right-hander Preston Snavely (3-4) took the loss on the mound for WSU in the opening game after giving up three earned runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Matthew Mika led UCF (23-17, 5-10 American) offensively, going 2-for-6, including a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning Friday before the game was suspended.

Chris Williams (4-3) earned the win on the mound for UCF after surrendering one unearned run and one earned run on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Reliever Luis Ferrer pitched three innings to get the save for the Knights.

In the series finale, eight different Shockers picked up at least one hit, with Alex Jackson leading the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Boyer and Sigrist each drove in two runs in the winning effort. Boyer, Paxton Wallace, Jacob Katzfey and Garrett Kocis all had a double in the game, respectively.

The Shocker pitching staff struck out 17 batters in game two, with senior right-hander Clayton McGinness (4-3) earning the win out of the bullpen after giving up one earned run on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in three innings pitched. Junior Mitchell Walters earned his team-best seventh save of 2019, pitching 1 2/3 innings and only allowing one hit and striking out a career-high five batters.

All of UCF's runs in the second game were via home runs, with Mika hitting a solo shot in the first, Griffin Bernardo hitting a two-run home run in the second, and Dalton Wingo hitting a solo homer in the sixth.

Garrett Westberg (2-4) suffered the loss on the mound after pitching three innings and surrendering two earned runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Wichita State is slated to close out its eight-game homestand with a midweek contest against the Oklahoma Sooners Tuesday, April 23, at 6 p.m.
