Shockers Fall Short to Arkansas in Doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In a rematch from the 2018 NCAA Regional Final, the Wichita State softball team fell short in both games of the doubleheader (9-1 and 4-2) against Arkansas on Wednesday at Bogle Park.

Sydney McKinney collected two hits in game one, hitting her first career home run in the process. Madison Perrigan hit her ninth home run of the season in game two, marking the second time in three games where she hit a home run.

Game One
Arkansas came up with a leadoff single to start the bottom of the first, but Erin McDonald retired the next six batters to keep the game scoreless after two innings. After retiring the side in the third inning, a single by McKinney gave the Shockers a chance to strike first. The Razorbacks, however, forced three straight outs to prevent any damage.

Following two leadoff walks, Arkansas came up with a single and scored the game's first run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arkansas extended its lead after a wild pitch and a left center double an inning later, scoring off another wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Razorbacks a three-run lead.

McKinney answered back in the top of the sixth, coming up with her first career home run to cut the deficit down to two runs with two outs. Despite the Shockers gaining life, Arkansas responded with a six-run bottom of the sixth.

The Razorbacks started the inning with two singles and scored two runs off a double to left field. A sacrifice fly to center field and an RBI single allowed Arkansas to extend its lead to six runs. Coming up with hits 11 and 12, the Razorbacks came up with the eight-run lead that allowed them to end the game in a run rule after six innings.

McKinney came up with her ninth multi-hit game of the season, marking the second time in four games where she has collected two or more hits.

Game Two
Wichita State hit the ground running in the second game of the doubleheader, claiming a two-run lead after Perrigan's ninth home run of the season in the top of the first and Kaylee Huecker scoring on a throwing error in the top of the third. Arkansas cut away at the lead a half-inning later, scoring its first run off a double to left field after a hit by pitch and single.

The Razorbacks took advantage in their next at-bat, coming up with a three-run home run to make it a 4-2 lead. Arkansas slowed the Shocker offense down through the next three innings, retiring nine straight batters.

Caitlin Bingham kept the Shockers in the game by not allowing a hit in the fourth and fifth inning, but Arkansas got runners on base following a fielding error and a walk. Wichita State prevented any damage, however, by coming up with a fielder's choice to third base, a strikeout and a groundout to first base to end the sixth inning.

Needing two runs to come back, the Shockers started the top of the seventh with a pop up and a hit by pitch drawn by Bailee Nickerson to put the tying run at the plate. Bingham was forced into a groundout that moved the runners to second and third and Huecker came up with an RBI to cut the deficit to one, but the Shockers over ran the bases and were tagged out to end the game.

Bingham collected four strikeouts and only forced the Razorbacks to only four hits, forcing Arkansas to a .138 batting average on the game.

Wichita State (23-19) continues its road trip, making the trip to Memphis for a three-game conference series beginning on Friday at 5 p.m.
