Shockers Rally with Seven-Run Inning, Win Doubleheader

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Feeding off a seven-run top of the eighth inning, the Wichita State softball team claimed the first two games of the series against Memphis in Friday's doubleheader 10-3 in extra innings and 8-4.

Madison Perrigan led the Shockers with four combined hits and four RBIs in the two games, coming up with three doubles and tying her career high with two in the second game. Erin McDonald picked up her ninth win of the season, while Caitlin Bingham claimed her 12th win of the season.

Game One
The Shockers started things off in the top of the first with Sydney McKinney reaching on a leadoff single and Ryleigh Buck hitting her fourth career triple to bring in the game's first run. Perrigan continued the hit parade by coming up with her 10th double of the season to score Buck from third and extending the Shocker lead to 2-0.

Drawing two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases, the Shockers scored their third run of the inning when Neleigh Herring drew the third walk of the inning to move the lead to three. Memphis strung together three consecutive singles, scoring a run to cut the lead to two.

McDonald retired 10 straight batters before Memphis came up with a two-out double to left field in the bottom of the sixth, with another double down the left field run scoring a run for the Lady Tigers that cut the Shocker lead down to one. The Shockers got two runners on with a walk and a hit by pitch, but Memphis forced a fly out to left field to end the top of the seventh.

Memphis kept its hopes alive with a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, but the next batter stepped out of the batter's box on the sacrifice bunt attempt to keep the runner stranded at first with one out. After a wild pitch moved the Lady Tigers' runner to second base, Gracie Morton came up with a single up the middle to bring the tying run home. Wylie Glover threw out a runner headed for home after a Memphis single and McDonald forced a fly out to move the game into extra innings.

The go-ahead run was put in scoring position following a single by Lauren Mills and a sacrifice bunt, with Bethany Canada putting runners at the corner following her first hit of the season. Buck drove in the run by hitting into a fielder's choice that allowed pinch runner Adi Reese to advance safely to home.

With the bases loaded, Laurie Derrico cleared the bases with a double to left center that gave the Shockers a 7-3 lead. Herring kept the momentum going with an RBI single to left center and Mauriana Jamele followed with her fourth career double that scored the sixth and seventh run of the inning.

Wichita State's seven-run inning became the second highest scoring inning of the season, with the Shockers scoring eight runs in one inning two previous times and the last occurring on March 2 against Texas Southern. It became the first time since March 31 against UConn that the Shockers scored five or more runs in one inning.

Game Two
McKinney got on base off a Memphis error to start the top of the first and Buck brought in the first two runs of the game off her sixth home run of the season. Memphis responded with a one-out double to left center a half-inning later, cutting the deficit to one run.

The Shockers kept the offensive heat on in the top of the second, getting two runners on base with back-to-back walks. Perrigan capitalized on the opportunity with a double to center field to extend the Shocker lead by three. With the bases loaded, the Shockers scored another run off a Memphis error to take a 5-1 lead.

Derrico came up with a double following a leadoff walk to put runners in scoring position, with Reese recording her second career double to drive in two runs that extended the lead to 7-1. Memphis responded with two straight singles, scoring off a sacrifice grounder to second and a center field double that cut the Shockers' lead down to four. The Lady Tigers kept chipping away at Wichita State's lead, hitting a leadoff home run to start the bottom of the fifth.

Memphis looked for life in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single, but Hailey Martinez forced the Lady Tigers into three straight outs to protect Wichita State's three-run lead. Jamele came through with a pinch hit single to start the top of the seventh, with the Shockers getting a runner to second off a wild pitch after a fielder's choice groundout.

Reese came up with a career high of two hits in the second game and Martinez collected her first career save. Wichita State (25-19, 6-5) looks to move its conference winning streak to five games and go for the series sweep against Memphis on Sunday at 12 p.m.
