Shockers Fall on the Road to New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The No. 39-ranked Wichita State men's tennis team fell in a hard-fought battle, 4-2, to New Mexico Saturday at the McKinnon Family Stadium.
 
DOUBLES
Stefan Latinovic and Haru Inoue got off to a hot start for the Shockers in the third flight, where they took down Casey Recci and Tim Buttner, 6-1 to give WSU the early advantage. New Mexico answered in the second flight, where Dominic West and Facundo Bermejo took down Shocker duo Andrea Caligiana and Marius Frosa, 6-1. Murkel Delline and Eddie Stoica were down big early, before cutting the Lobo lead to one at 5-4. Ricky Hernandez Tong and Stepan Holis took the final game to give UNM the doubles point.
 
SINGLES
Eddie Stoica got things going early for the 39th-ranked Shockers, taking down Tim Buttner in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) to tie the match at one.  Freshman Orel Ovil reeled off his fourth win in a row in the sixth flight, defeating Recci in straight sets. The Lobos answered on court three, where Holis took down Frosa (6-2, 6-4) to tie the match once again, this time at two.
 
Inoue battled Hernandez Tong in the top slot, where the two split the first two sets. After rallying to take the second set over Hernandez Tong (6-4), the senior fell in the third (6-1) to give the Lobos a 3-2 advantage.
 
Dellien and Latinovic each racked up first set wins in flights two and five, respectively. Dellien rolled through the first set (6-1) over west. West rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the second frame to win the set in a tiebreaker (7-6(5). On court five, Latinovic squared off with Bermejo, taking the first in a tight one (7-6(4). Bermejo answered in sets two and three to take the match and clinch the 4-2 win for the Lobos. Dellien trailed 5-3 in the third before going unfinished.
 
The Shockers (7-6) will return home on Tuesday, March 12 to take on Memphis at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The match is slated for 12 p.m. against the Tigers.
