Frosa Leads Shockers to Win over No. 50 Memphis

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to take down No. 50 Memphis Tuesday at Genesis Health Clubs.
 
Junior Marius Frosa provided his second match-clinching point of the season, this time in the third slot over Jeremy Taylor in a three-set battle.
 


DOUBLES
Memphis grabbed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Jan Pallares and Patrick Sydow knocked off Shocker duo Marius Frosa and Andrea Caligiana, 6-2. Oscar Cutting and David Stevenson followed in the top slot, winning 6-4 over Murkel Dellien and Eddie Stoica to clinch the point. Haru Inoue and Stefan Latinovic were knotted up at four before play was suspended.
 
SINGLES
Two of the six flights went to tiebreakers, with the Shockers coming out on the upper end. Memphis jumped on the board first in singles play, where Stevenson dropped Orel Ovil in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Latinovic answered for the Shockers, reeling off a 6-3, 6-4 win in the fifth slot to cut the Tiger lead to 2-1. Chris Patzanovsky, who ranks No. 123 in ITA/Oracle Singles Rankings, put Memphis up 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Inoue in the first slot.
 
Stoica collected his second win in a row in the fourth slot, taking down Matt Story. The two battled in the first set, before Stoica came away a winner in the tiebreaker. The senior from Auckland, New Zealand, rolled in the second set (6-2) to give the Shockers their second point of the match.
 
The last two matches on were full of excitement, as Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa each went the distance on courts two and three, respectively. Dellien raced out to a 5-3 lead in the first set, before Pallares rallied to tie the match at six. The Trinidad, Bolivia, native took the first set (7-6). Pallares took a close second set (7-6) to force a third. Meanwhile, Frosa split the first two sets with Taylor on court three to go to a third. Dellien and Frosa showed nothing but fight and resiliency in the set. With the Shockers trailing 3-2 in the match, Dellien rolled in the third (6-1) to knot the match at three. The match of the day was on court three, between Frosa and Taylor. In a winner take all third, Taylor jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Frosa grabbed a break and held serve to tie the match at three. The pair held the rest of the way to force a tiebreaker. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the breaker, Frosa prevailed with a 7-4 win to clinch the match for the Shockers.
 

 
The Shockers (7-7) are next in action this Friday when they travel to Lincoln to take on the Cornhuskers at 4:30 p.m.
