Cowgirls Shutout Shockers, Snapping Win Streak

STILLWATER, Okla. - With the Wichita State softball team claiming the last four victories over Oklahoma State, the Cowgirls got their revenge. Behind seven strikeouts from the pitching staff, OSU defeated the Shockers 3-0 on Wednesday night at Cowgirl Stadium.

Caitlin Bingham started her ninth game of the season, but was charged with her second loss in 2019 after allowing the two go-ahead runs. Wichita State's pitchers also forced the Cowgirls to hit .190, marking the sixth straight game where the Shockers forced the opposition to hit under .200.

The Shockers claimed six hits as a team and only forced OSU to four team hits, but the Cowgirls held Wichita State to .222 on the night. Erin McDonald led the Shockers in the circle with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched in relief, only allowing two hits.

Laurie Derrico started the Shockers off with a single in the top of the first, moving 90 feet away from scoring the first run. OSU, however, forced a groundout following two walks to retire the side.

The Cowgirls struck first, with Rylee Bayless scoring from second off a Chyenne Factor single down the left field line in the bottom of the first. Factor added to the OSU lead two innings later, hitting her second home run of the season to center field to make it a 2-0 game. OSU managed to get two more runners on, but McDonald came in to force a groundout to third base to prevent further damage.

Bayless extended the OSU lead with her third home run of the season, hitting it to left center for the Cowgirls' third run of the game. Wichita State looked to respond, with Wylie Glover leading off the top of the fifth inning with a bunt single. OSU managed to get out of the inning with no damage, coming up with two strikeouts and forcing a fielder's choice grounder.

With OSU forcing a fly out and a groundout to start the top of the sixth inning, pinch hitter Adi Reese singled to shortstop to come up with her second career hit. Kaylee Huecker answered back with a single to left field and advanced to second on the throw, putting runners in scoring position on second and third with the tying run at the plate. The Cowgirls got out of the inning with its sixth shutout inning, forcing a fly out to left to keep the lead knotted at three.

McDonald struck out two batters and forced a groundout to third base to force a quick bottom of the sixth, but the Cowgirls returned the favor by forcing a 1-2-3 to claim the win. Glover came up with a hit in her sixth straight game, while Derrico extended her hit streak to five.

OSU won its fifth straight game, coming up with its third shutout during that five-game stretch.

Wichita State (14-5) holds its season opener on Saturday, playing a doubleheader against Nebraska starting at 1 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
