Six-Run Fourth Inning Leads Shockers to Home Opener Win

WICHITA, Kan. - Feeding off a six-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, the Wichita State softball team ended its home opener with a 10-1 run-rule win over Nebraska on Saturday at Wilkins Stadium.

Laurie Derrico and Asea Webber led the way offensively, coming up with two hits in both their at-bats. Derrico extended her hit streak to six games while Webber's outing was the third time in four games where she collected two or more hits. Erin McDonald came up with her third win of the season in the circle, only allowing three hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

Nebraska struck first after two walks and a single loaded the bases, scoring the game's first run off a single up the middle by Tristen Edwards in the top of the first. The Shockers managed to prevent any more damage, with Kaylee Huecker diving for a grounder that resulted in a fielder's choice out at second to retire the side.

After Wylie Glover's leadoff single and two walks loaded the bases a half-inning later, Wichita State snagged the lead from Webber's single up the middle that swung the lead 2-1. A groundout by Ryleigh Buck allowed a third run to score and the Shockers would end the first inning with a two-run lead.

The Shockers managed to force six consecutive outs through the second and third innings, with Derrico adding to the lead in the bottom of the third with her fourth home run of the season. Nebraska would end its hit drought in the top of the fourth with a single, but McDonald forced two fly outs to retire the side.

Following Webber's bunt single and Buck's walk, Huecker came up with her third career double to left field that added two more runs in addition to giving the Lake St. Louis, Mo., native a new career-high for RBIs. Huecker scored off a Nebraska error, with Derrico coming up with an RBI single to left field that pushed the Shockers out in front 8-1.

Madison Perrigan followed up with the nail in the coffin, hitting a two-run home run to left center that gave the Shockers a nine-run lead. Perrigan's fourth home run of the season marked the sixth time where she drove in two or more runs.

With Derrico's home run, she moved up to second in program history for career home runs and is four home runs away from breaking the program record set by Cacy Williams (2014-16). After a two RBI day, the Sterling, Okla., native moved to fourth all-time in RBIs. She is six RBIs away from tying Britnee Barnett (2005-08) for third in program history.

The Shockers' defense held Nebraska to a .210 batting average, making it the sixth straight game where Wichita State held its opponent to four hits or less.

Wichita State (15-5) continues its series with the Cornhuskers on Sunday, finishing action off with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Wilkins Stadium.
