Yannik Emmert Recap

Emmert in Second after Two Rounds

3/15/2019 12:00:00 AM

PHOENIX - After coming up with two under-par performances, senior Yannik Emmert is in second place after the first two rounds of the GCU Invitational.

Emmert shot 4-under par in the first round, claiming a season-low 18-hole score of 67. He followed in the second round with a 3-under par 68. This is the first time since 2017 where Emmert has finished with two scores under 70 in his career, with that accomplishment giving him the Pro Compression Invitational title.

The senior started the first round shooting for par in 10 of his first 12 holes while collecting two birdies to be placed in a tie for third. After shooting a bogey on the 15th green, Palmer Hays responded with three consecutive birdies to jump into a tie with Emmert for third through 12 holes. Their effort in addition to the performance of Dawson Lewis, who shot an even-par through his first 13 holes, lifted the Shockers into a tie for second.

Carrying that momentum into round two, Emmert carded five birdies to make a jump into second place. The Buchholz, Germany, native trails Jamie Stewart of Missouri for the lead, who was unable to finish his second round on Friday due to darkness.

Hays was one stroke off his career best of 70, finishing the day with two 71 rounds to be placed in a tie for 26th. The Fayetteville, Ark., native tallied six birdies and six bogeys to claim an even-par finish on day one.

After coming up with a 74 in the first round, Brock Polhill responded with three birdies in the second round to finish with an even-par in the second round. His 71 second round score matched his career low, where he last obtained that score at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Sept. 10, 2018.

Lewis came up one stroke short of matching his career low 18-hole score, totaling four birdies to finish the first round with a 1-under par outing. The Flower Mound, Texas, native finished with a 76 in the second round, moving him into a tie for 59th. Senior Zac Owens finished the first 36 holes with a 147 to put him in a tie for 68th.

Wichita State collected its third lowest round score of the season in the first round, finishing with a combined team score of 281. The Shockers' 284 second round score moved them into sixth place, only trailing by two strokes of UTEP for fifth.

UMKC holds a 12-stroke lead over the Shockers and finished day one in first place, with Missouri coming in second. Missouri and Grand Canyon will finish round two on Saturday morning, with darkness cutting play short on Friday.

Tee-off begins at 7:45 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live stats are available on Golfstat.com.
