Shockers Down Bearcats for Sixth Win in a Row

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's tennis team fought off a late Cincinnati rally, dropping the Bearcats 4-2 Sunday at the Wichita Country Club. The win marks the sixth in a row for the Shockers.
 
DOUBLES
For the ninth time this season, the Shockers grabbed the doubles point. This time, WSU took wins on courts one and three to clinch the point. Ting-Ya Hsu and LingWei Kong, who won their sixth match in a row, took down Emma Miceli and Caroline Morton, 6-1. On court two, Marta Bellucco and Sandra Honigova dropped just their second match of the season to Ioana Guna and Anna Philp, 6-2. Esther Thebault and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva moved to 5-3 on the season on court one, taking down Antonella Bramato and Alexia Coutino (6-4) to take the point.
 
SINGLES
In the second flight, Thebault recorded her third win in a row in the second slot, taking down Bramato in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to push WSU to a 2-0 lead.
 
Honigova continued her win streak in the top flight, where she took on Guna. The senior who ranks No. 118 reeled off her seventh-straight win, 6-1, 6-4, giving the Shockers a 3-0 advantage.
 
The Bearcats got on the board in the third flight, where Morton dropped Bellucco in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
 
In flight four, it was a battle between Cincinnati's Maria Santelli and WSU's LingWei Kong. Kong rolled in the first, 6-3, before Santilli took the second, 6-4. In the third, Santilli rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take the set (7-5) and cut the Shocker lead to one.
 
The Shockers clinched the match in the sixth flight, where Hsu defeated Philp in straight sets. After rolling to a 6-2 win in the first, Hsu fell behind early in the second (2-1) before rallying to take the set and the match against the Bearcats.
 
Saidhujaeva took on Miceli in the fifth flight, falling in the first set (6-2), with the match going unfinished tied at four in the second.
 
With the win, the Shockers improve to 7-4 on the season, winners of six-straight.
