NORMAN – The Wichita State men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 13 Oklahoma Thursday evening at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
Murkel Dellien and
Haru Inoue gave the Shockers an early advantage in doubles play, with a 6-1 win on court two over Jochen Bertsch and Alex Bakshi. OU's Ferran Calvo and Mason Beiler knocked off
Andrea Caligiana and freshman Stefan Latinovic, 6-4.
Eddie Stoica and
Marius Frosa battled in the top slot, taking on Spencer Papa and Jake Van Emburgh. The pairs went back and forth, pushing it to a five-all tie. Papa and Van Emburgh rallied to win the final two games to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Dellien fell to Papa (6-3, 6-2) on court one to push the Sooner lead to 2-0. On court two, Frosa took on Van Emburgh. After dropping the first set (6-2), Frosa jumped out to an early lead before Van Emburgh ralled to take the match (6-4) and give the Sooners a 3-0 lead. OU clinched the 4-0 win on court four where Calvo knocked off Latinovic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Caligiana's matched with Bertsch went unfinished on court five, trailing 7-6(6). Freshman
Orel Ovil was leading 6-4, 4-2 before going unfinished and Inoue lead Bakshi 7-6(4), 1-3.
The Shockers fall to 0-1 on the season and host Denver for their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 12 p.m. CT at Genesis Health Club.
