Shockers Collect 5-2 Win over Denver

 
WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's tennis team collected a 5-2 win over Denver, Saturday at Genesis Health Club.
 
With the win, the Shockers improve to 1-1 on the season, while Denver drops to 0-1.
 
Doubles
The Shockers made quick work of the Pioneers in doubles action, winning matches in the first and second flights to clinch the doubles point. On court one, Marius Frosa and Eddie Stoica took on Denver's James Davis and Matt Summers. The Shocker duo jumped to an early lead and never looked back, winning 6-3. Murkel Dellien and Haru Inoue won 6-3 on court two over Mattia Ros and Pedro Del Valle Fernandez, moving their record to 2-0 on the young season. Freshman Stefan Latinovic joined senior Andrea Caligiana on court three, as the pair led 5-3 over Eric Morris and Daniel Krulig before going unfinished.
 
Singles
WSU jumped out to a 2-0 with a win in the number two slot. Inoue, one of foru seniors on the roster, jumped out to a big lead on Fernandez and never looked back, winning 6-1 in the first. After trailing early in the second, Inoue rallied to win three-straight games and give the Shockers the advantage.
 
Competing in the one spot, Dellien took on No. 109 ranked Mattia Ros. The junior from Bolivia rolled in the first set (6-3), before picking up a 7-5 win in the second to give the WSU the 3-0 lead. Frosa competed in the third slot, where he took on Matt Summers. The two traded sets (6-4, 2-6) before Frosa rolled in the third, clinching the 4-0 lead.
 
The Shockers pushed it to a 5-0 lead, after Caligiana won a three-set match over Daniel Krulig (3-6, 6-3, 6-2). The pioneers got on the board with a win in the sixth flight. Castelino and Ovil battled it out, before Castelino won (6-1, 4-6, 6-4).
 
Latinovic, one of two freshmen on the roster, took on James Davis in just his second collegiate match. After winning the first set (6-4), Latinovic dropped the final two sets (6-1, 7-5).
 
The Shockers improve to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Starkville, Miss. Jan. 26-27 for ITA Kick-off Weekend where they will take on No. 4 Mississippi State in their first-round matchup. Arizona and UNC-Wilmington will also be at the site.
