Tulsa Outlasts Wichita State, 3-2

TULSA, Okla. – The Wichita State volleyball team fell to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 3-2, in the annual Havoc in the Heartland match Saturday evening, Sept. 29, inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Shockers lost by match scores of 41-39, 20-25, 25-18, 15-25 and 17-19.

With the setback, WSU drops to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in The American, while Tulsa improves to 11-4 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. The loss also snaps Wichita State's 22-game American Athletic Conference winning streak dating back to last season.

Redshirt freshman Megan Taflinger led Wichita State with a career-high 24 kills and 17 digs for her second-career double-double, while senior Kali Eaken added a career-best 68 assists, and Giorgia Civita compiled a career-high 42 digs.

In her first match of the season, sophomore Brooke Smith hit .423 with a career-best 13 kills, while Abby Pugh also had a career-high 13 kills. Tabitha Brown added a double-double with 15 kills and a career-best 22 digs, respectively.

The Shockers outlasted the Golden Hurricane in the longest set in program history, rallying from an early six-point deficit to claim a 41-39 win in set one to gain a 1-0 lead in the match.

After the two teams continued to fight-off set-point, Pugh put WSU in front, 40-39, with a kill off an Eaken assist before an attacking error on a serve from Brown secured the set win for Wichita State.

Tulsa fought back in the second set to claim a 25-20 victory and knot the match, 1-1.

The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 7-5 advantage in set three before Wichita State rolled off five consecutive points to gain a 10-7 lead after a Pugh kill via an Eaken assist. The Shockers would not relinquish the lead the remainder of the set and went on to win 25-18 to regain the lead in the match, 2-1.

Tulsa tied the match, 2-2, after rolling to a 25-15 win in set four to force a decisive fifth set. The Golden Hurricane posted six blocks in the set while limiting Wichita State to just .128 hitting.

After falling behind 14-11 and facing match-point in set five, the Shockers roared back to tie the set, 14-14, after a pair of kills from Taflinger and blocks from Alex Koon and Smith. The two teams traded match points until a kill from Elyse Savadove and a Shocker attacking error secured the match win for Tulsa.

Rachel Moore had 19 kills and 23 digs to pace the Golden Hurricane.

Wichita State is scheduled to travel to Tampa, Fla., to take on South Florida in an American Athletic Conference match Friday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. ET.
