TAMPA, Fla. – Wichita State improved to 3-1 in American Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win at USF. The Shockers won by scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-21.
Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 19 kills, three service aces and three digs.
Alex Koon had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Kora Kauling had 23 assists, while
Kali Eaken had 22 assists.
Giorgia Civita had a match-high 26 digs.
The Shockers jumped in front 4-0 in the first set and pushed the lead to 14-6 with a 5-0 run. Two kills from
Megan Taflinger made the score 23-14 and
Chase Jackson's kill brought the Shockers to set point at 24-16.
Kali Eaken's service ace gave WSU the 25-16 win. Taflinger led the Shockers with six kills in the set, while
Giorgia Civita had seven digs.
The second set went back and forth until the Bulls used a 3-0 run to take a 19-15 lead. The Shockers tied it at 19 on a kill by
Alex Koon, but USF scored six of the last eight points to win the set 25-21.
WSU used a 10-0 run for a 19-9 lead in the third set. The Bulls used two-straight blocks to pull within 21-14, but the Shockers closed out the set 25-17 on kills from
Grace Burken and Eaken.
Kills from
Tabitha Brown and Eaken gave WSU the 10-4 advantage in the fourth set and a Bulls error pushed the lead to 13-5. USF chipped away at the lead and pulled within 20-17 after a couple of kills. Two kills from Koon gave the Shockers a 23-18 lead and a Taflinger kill ended it at 25-21.
The Shockers are next in action on Sunday, Oct. 7 at UCF at 12 p.m. CT.
