ORLANDO, Fla. – The Wichita State volleyball team fell at UCF, 3-1, Sunday, Oct. 7, inside The Venue at UCF. WSU lost by set scores of 25-20, 22-25, 23-25 and 18-25.
Wichita State (8-8, 3-2 American Athletic Conference) is slated to host East Carolina at Charles Koch Arena Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
Redshirt freshman
Megan Taflinger tallied a match-high 16 kills to go along with six digs, while freshman
Grace Burken posted a career-high 11 kills and three blocks to lead the Shockers.
Junior
Alex Koon added 12 kills and nine digs, and senior
Kali Eaken compiled 28 assists. Sophomore
Giorgia Civita posted a match-high 32 digs.
The Shockers and Knights (14-3, 5-0 American Athletic Conference) were tied in set one, 3-3, before WSU scored three consecutive points after kills from Taflinger and Koon, and blocks from
Brooke Smith and Koon to jump out to a 6-3 lead. Wichita State did not relinquish the advantage the remainder of the set on its way to the 25-20 victory.
WSU and UCF battled back and forth in the second set before the Knights McKenna Melville broke a 20-20 tie with a kill to put Central Florida in front, 21-20. UCF went on to win the set, 25-22, tying the match, 1-1.
The Shockers and Knights were tied, 23-23, in set three when UCF's Anne-Marie Watson and Erin Olson tallied back-to-back kills to give Central Florida the 25-23 victory in the set and the 2-1 advantage in the match.
In set four, UCF fell behind 3-2 before scoring five consecutive points to gain a 7-3 lead. The Knights did not give up the lead the remainder of the set on their way to a 25-18 triumph, sealing the match victory.
Wichita State hit .198 for the match and had 60 kills, 83 digs, four service aces and five blocks.
Watson led the Knights with 15 kills and a .250 hitting percentage, while Jordan Pingel tallied 23 digs and Olson compiled 23 assists.
UCF hit .248 with 54 kills, 75 digs, two service aces and 14 blocks.
