WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State improved to 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 win over Memphis. The Shockers won by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 26-24.
Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 16 kills, while
Tabitha Brown had 10 kills and 12 digs.
Kali Eaken finished with 35 assists and seven digs, while
Giorgia Civita had 29 digs.
Memphis took an early 6-2 lead in the first set before the Shockers were able to take a 12-11 lead behind the serving of
Megan Taflinger. Back to back kills from
Tabitha Brown put the Shockers up 14-12 and a block by
Abby Pugh and
Alex Koon pushed the lead to 21-17. A
Giorgia Civita service ace and Memphis error gave the Shockers the 25-18 win.
The second set went back and forth until the Shockers used a 4-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. A Taflinger kill made the score 19-16 and Koon's kill gave WSU the 25-21 win.
The Tigers raced out to a 10-7 lead in the third set, but the Shockers used kills from Eaken, Burken and Taflinger to go in front 18-16. Memphis fought back to tie it at 24, but the Shockers used kills from Burken and Taflinger to finish off the set 26-24.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 29 at Tulsa at 6 p.m.
