Koon's Double-Double Lifts Shockers to 3-1 Win

PROVO, Utah – Wichita State used a double-double from Alex Koon to earn a 3-1 win over West Virginia in the BYU Nike Invitational. The Shockers won by scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-16.
 
Koon had 15 kills and a career-high 16 digs and hit .438, while Tabitha Brown and Megan Taflinger each added 11 kills. Kali Eaken had 25 assists and three kills, while Jordan Roberts had 23 assists and two aces. Giorgia Civita finished with 15 digs.
 
SET 1:
• West Virginia took a back and forth first set 25-22
• A Tabitha Brown kill put the Shockers up 10-8, but the Mountaineers used a service ace to go in front 14-13
• The Shockers could get no closer than one the rest of the way as WVU won 25-22
Alex Koon led the Shockers with five kills, while Abby Pugh added three
 
SET 2:
• The Shockers evened the match with a 25-22 win in the second set
• The Shockers fell behind 12-10, but tied it at 14 on a kill by Megan Taflinger
• Brown's kill put WSU in front 16-15 and another Brown kill pushed the lead to 19-16
• Two-straight kills pulled WVU within 23-22, but a Brown kill and a Mountaineer hitting error gave WSU the 25-22 win
 
SET 3:
• WSU won the third set 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match
• A Taflinger kill gave WSU a 12-11 lead and kills from Brown and Wright pushed the advantage to 18-14
• Two-straight blocks by Koon and Pugh made the score 23-17 and a Brown kill gave WSU the 25-19 win
 
SET 4:
• The Shockers won the match with a 25-16 win in the fourth set
• WSU raced out to a 9-2 lead in the set and used a Wright kill to make the score 15-5
• WVU used a 4-0 run to pull within 15-9, but three Taflinger kills pushed the lead to 19-12
• A Brown kill brought the Shockers to match point at 24-16 and Koon's kill ended it at 25-16
 
The Shockers are next in action on Saturday, Sept. 1 against No. 1 Stanford at 11 a.m. CT.
