Shockers Fall to No. 1 Stanford, 3-0

PROVO, Utah – No. 1 Stanford hit .364 to defeat Wichita State 3-0 in the BYU Nike Invitational. The Cardinal won by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 29-27.
 
Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with 11 kills and eight digs, while Grace Burken had six kills and hit .600. Kali Eaken had 19 assists and Giorgia Civita had 11 digs.
 
SET 1:
• No. 1 Stanford held off the Shockers 25-20 in the first set
• The Cardinal raced out to a 5-1 lead, but the Shockers came back to tie it at 10 on a Tabitha Brown kill
• The two teams traded points until Stanford used a 3-0 run to go in front 17-14
• An Abby Pugh kill pulled the Shockers within 20-18, but the Cardinal scored five of the last seven points for the 25-20 win
• Brown led the Shockers with four kills, while Pugh and Emma Wright each had three kills
 
SET 2:
• The Cardinal used a late run to defeat WSU 25-20 in the second set
• Stanford again raced out to a 5-1 lead, but two-straight kills from Grace Burken and a Brown block pulled WSU within 5-4
• The Cardinal used a WSU hitting error to push their lead to 14-7, but WSU responded with a 10-3 run to tie the set at 17
• After a Pugh kill tied it at 18, the Cardinal closed out the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-20
• Burken had five kills in the set for WSU
 
SET 3:
• Stanford fought back for a 29-27 win in the third set
• A block by Koon and Wright gave the Shockers an early 9-6 lead
• Stanford used a service ace to tie it at 10 and the two teams traded points until the Cardinal used back to back kills to take a 16-14 lead
• Two kills from Brown tied the score at 20 and kills from Megan Taflinger and Koon brought the Shockers to set point at 24-23
• Stanford fought off three set points to come back and win 29-27
 
The Shockers are next in action tonight against No. 9 BYU at 8 p.m. CT.
