WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State women's basketball head coach
Keitha Adams announced the team's 2018-19 non-conference schedule Wednesday morning.
"We're very excited to announce our non-conference game schedule," Adams said. "We have 10 new players on our roster and this schedule will provide our fans several opportunities to get to know our new team."
The 13-game slate includes 10 home games, two neutral site contests and a road matchup. Television information and the American Athletic Conference schedule will be released at a later date.
Wichita State hosts Missouri Southern State, a Division II program from Joplin, Mo., in an exhibition tune-up on Thursday, Nov. 1 and officially opens the regular season six days later on Wednesday, Nov. 7 against Arkansas Pine Bluff in Charles Koch Arena.
Following the season opener, WSU welcomes Missouri State (Nov. 10), Sam Houston State (Nov. 14) and Houston Baptist (Nov. 17) to Charles Koch Arena. Four home games to start the campaign will help acclimate 10 newcomers to the team this season. The Shockers return just three letterwinners from 2017-18.
WSU's lone true road game of the pre-conference schedule takes the Shockers north to Vermillion, S.D., to face South Dakota on Wednesday, Nov. 21. South Dakota went 29-7 last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT.
A five-game homestand wraps up November and opens competition in December. Visits from Louisiana Tech (Nov. 24), Oklahoma State (Nov. 27) and Creighton (Dec. 8) highlight the home stretch. Other contests vs. Tennessee Tech (Dec. 2), Grambling State (Dec. 11) and Savannah State (Dec. 30) make up the remaining home dates.
The Shockers will also participate in a pre-Christmas tournament, the Duel in the Desert, Dec. 19-20. The trip to Las Vegas includes Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Northwestern, Utah, Washington State and host-school UNLV. The field will be split into two divisions of four teams, the Rebel Division and Desert Division, and each division will crown a champion. The Desert Division features Kansas, Northwestern, Washington State and Wichita State. WSU will face Northwestern in its opening game and then face either KU or Washington State the following day.
"We have a mixture of opponents that will challenge and prepare us for conference play,"Â Adams said. "We are proud to continue games with Missouri State, Creighton, Oklahoma State and Louisiana Tech that have great traditions. The trips to South Dakota and Las Vegas will be great competition for our team. Shocker fans we look forward to seeing you at tip-off."
