CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 20 UConn scored two runs in the seventh to come back and defeat Wichita State 7-5 in the second round of the American Athletic Conference Championship.
The Shockers will next play USF in an elimination game on Thursday at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET at Robin Roberts Field.
Alec Bohm went 3-for-4 with a home run and RBI and
Ross Cadena went 2-for-4, while
Luke Ritter,
Greyson Jenista and
Jordan Boyer each had a RBI.
Starter
Codi Heuer went five innings and gave up four runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
The Huskies struck first in the top of the first. The first three batters reached on two walks and a hit by pitch and one scored on double play ball to put UConn up 1-0.
Ross Cadena led off the second with a single and
Alex Jackson reached first on a wild pitch after striking out. Both runners advanced on another wild pitch and Cadena scored on
Jordan Boyer's sacrifice bunt to tie the score at one.
Luke Ritter followed with a RBI single and
Greyson Jenista's sacrifice fly put the Shockers up 3-1. Ritter came home to score on a wild pitch and push the lead to 4-1.
The Huskies used three hits, two wild pitches and two passed balls to score three runs in the fifth and tie the game at four.
John Toppa led off the seventh with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on Zac Susi's single to give the Huskies a 5-4 lead. Troy Stefanski's RBI triple increased UConn's lead to 6-4.
UConn added another run in the eighth and Bohm's home run in the ninth made the final score 7-5.
The Shockers are next in action on Thurs., May 24 against USF at 8 a.m. CT/9 a.m. ET.
