WSU's Season Ends in Second Round of NCAA's

Results

OXFORD, Miss
. –  Wichita State's late rally fell short, as they fell in a hard-fought battle to No. 5 overall seed Ole Miss, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the Second Round of the NCAA Team Championships.

Head Coach Colin Foster on the match and the season for the Shockers:
"I just couldn't be more proud of this team. They played great doubles again, which put us in another position to be successful. Ole Miss is a top team, and they are hosting for a reason. They came out and took four fiurst sets, but we didn't give in on any court. We kept plugging away and trying to create opportunities, and we did. It was just a great college tennis match. GIulia and Gabriela have met so much to this program. Both have come through in matches like this a lot. I feel terrible for Giulia that this was her last match, but because of how well she's represented Wichita State, along with the whole team. I'm really proud of them, just came up a little bit short against a top-ranked team. There is a lot to be proud of in that effort.

Wichita State clinched the doubles point for the second-straight day, including a win over the No. 5 doubles tandem in the ITA/Oracle Doubles Rankings. Gabriela Porubin and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva earned their second win of the weekend, knocking off Sabina Machalova and Sanford 6-3, improving to 10-1 on the season. The Shocker duo of Fatima Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco, who came into the match ranked No. 72, knocked off their second top-10 doubles opponent in as many days, knocking off No. 5-ranked Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles. Ole Miss took the win on court two (6-3) over Giulia Guidetti and Ting-Ya Hsu.

Ole Miss got on the board first in singles action, with two wins on courts one and three. The Rebels' No. 7-ranked Hartono took down Bizhukova in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). Junior Sandra Honigova fell to Anna Vrbenska on court three, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

On court six, Allie Sanford pushed the Ole Miss lead to 3-1, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over WSU's Saidhujaeva.

Porubin started a late Shocker rally, where she took down Suk in a three-set battle (6-3, 3-6, 7-5). Ole Miss used a late rally on court two to clinch the match, 4-2. Guidetti and No. 79-ranked Machalova traded sets (6-4, 1-6) to force an exciting finish. Guidetti led 5-4 on match point, before Machalova came from behind to take the match 7-5.

Bellucco and Bortles traded sets in the fifth flight, before the match went unfinished.

Wichita State finishes the season with an 18-9 overall record, and its first NCAA Tournament victory in more than 10 years.
