Shockers Run Rule No. 22 USF, 17-2

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State pounded out 17 hits in a 17-2 run-rule win over No. 22 USF in game one of a three-game series.
 
Starter Codi Heuer threw a complete game and earned his sixth win of the season. He went eight innings and gave up two runs on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
 
Gunnar Troutwine went 4-for-5 with three RBI, a double and a home run, while Greyson Jenista went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a home run. Alec Bohm finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and two home runs.
 
Luke Ritter led off the first with a single to left field and moved to second on a groundout from Dayton Dugas and to third on a groundout from Alec Bohm. Gunnar Troutwine followed with a two-run blast to left field to put the Shockers up 2-0.
 
With one out in the second, JD Dutka doubled down the third base line and scored on a single by Kyle Phillips to cut the Shocker lead to 2-1.
 
Ross Cadena reached first on a strikeout and wild pitch to lead off the second. A Hunter Gibson walk moved him to second. With one out, Ritter singled up the middle to score Cadena to make the score 3-1.
 
The Shockers added to the lead in the third. Troutwine led off with a walk and Greyson Jenista singled up the middle to put runners at first and second. With one out, Cadena walked to load the bases and Hunter Gibson walked to score Troutwine for a 4-1 lead. Travis Young's two-run single scored Jenista and Cadena to push the lead to 6-1.
 
With one out in the fourth, Dutka tripled to right-center and scored on a Phillips single to cut the Shocker lead to 6-2.
 
Troutwine and Jenista both singled to lead off the fourth. With two outs, Gibson doubled to right-center to score both for an 8-2 advantage.
 
Ritter was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth, stole second and scored from second on a wild pitch. Alec Bohm followed with a home run to left-center and with two outs, Jenista singled and came around to score on a Cadena single for an 11-2 Shocker lead.
 
A Troutwine RBI single and Jenista two-run home run made the score 14-2 in the sixth.
 
Bohm hit his second home run of the game in the eighth and Troutwine scored on a wild pitch after doubling. Mason O'Brien's pinch-hit home run made the final score 17-2 in eight innings.
 
The Shockers and Bulls play game two of the series on Sat., May 12 at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series on Sun., May 13 at 10:30 a.m.
