Shockers Beat UConn, 15-7

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 20 Wichita State scored five runs in the first inning on the way to a 15-7 win over UConn in game three of the series.

Travis Young went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a double, while Luke Ritter went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a double and Greyson Jenista went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Starter Tommy Barnhouse went four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Reliever Keylan Killgore threw two shutout innings with two strikeouts.

UConn scored an unearned run in the top of the first. Anthony Prato reached first on an infield single and moved to third on a Shocker error. Zac Susi followed with a single to centerfield to drive in Prato for a 1-0 Husky lead.

The Shockers answered in the bottom of the first. Trey Vickers led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Luke Ritter. Alec Bohm walked to load the bases and with one out, Greyson Jenista singled through the left side to drive in Vickers and Ritter for a 2-1 Shocker lead. Dayton Dugas walked to load the bases and with two outs, Jordan Boyer singled to right-center to drive in Bohm and Jenista and Travis Young singled to score Dugas to push the lead to 5-1.

With one out in the third, Michael Woodworth singled and John Toppa tripled off the right field wall to score Woodworth. Prato's sacrifice fly drove in Toppa and pulled the Huskies within 5-3.

With one out in the sixth, Boyer and Young both singled to put runners at first and second. Vickers singled to right field to drive in Boyer and Young came home on a wild pitch to push the Shocker lead to 7-3.

The Huskies used five hits to score three runs and pull within 7-6 in the top of the seventh.

Gunnar Troutwine led off the seventh with a double and moved to third on a single by Jenista. Josh DeBacker's infield single scored Troutwine and with the bases loaded Young's sacrifice fly scored DeBacker for a 9-6 Shocker lead. Vickers was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ritter followed with a bases clearing double for a 12-6 Shocker lead. Bohm's single scored Ritter to increase the lead to 13-6.

In the eighth, Young's two-run two-out double made the score 15-6 and UConn added a run in the ninth for the final 15-7 score.

The Shockers are next in action on Tue., April 17 when they host Central Arkansas at 6 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
