WICHITA, Kan. – UConn scored five runs in the sixth inning on the way to a 7-4 win over No. 20 Wichita State in game one of a three-game series.
Greyson Jenista went 2-for-4 with a double, while
Alec Bohm went 2-for-4.
Luke Ritter and
Trey Vickers each went 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Starter
Codi Heuer went 5.1 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Troy Stefanski reached on a Shocker error and stole second base. With two outs, Chris Winkel singled up the middle to drive in Stefanski for a 1-0 Husky lead.
The Huskies added to the lead in the sixth. With one out, Anthony Prato and Zac Susi singled and Prato scored on a fielder's choice from Isaac Feldstein to push the lead to 2-0. Four more runs came in to score to increase the UConn lead to 6-0.
The Shockers cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Greyson Jenista led off with a single and with one out,
Gunnar Troutwine singled to put runners on first and second.
Trey Vickers singled to centerfield to drive in Jenista and
Hunter Gibson's groundout scored Troutwine to cut the lead to 6-2.
Luke Ritter's solo home run in the seventh pulled the Shockers within 6-3, but Feldstein answered with a solo shot in the eighth to put the Huskies up 7-3.
The Shockers added a run in the ninth on a double play for the final 7-4 score.
The Shockers and Huskies play game two of the series Friday evening and wrap up the series on Sun., April 15 at 1 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
