WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State hit its fifth grand slam of the season in a 12-3 win over UT Arlington in game one of a three game series.
Greyson Jenista went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a grand slam, while
Trey Vickers went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a home run in his 2018 debut.
Starter
Codi Heuer went six innings and gave up three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Mavericks jumped on the board in the first inning. With one out, Omar Salinas and Christian Hollie both singled and with two outs, Will Olson singled to drive in Salinas for a 1-0 Mavs lead.
The Shockers used a two-out rally to tie it in the bottom of the first. With two out,
Alec Bohm and Mason O'Brien singled to put runners on the corners and
Trey Vickers, in his first at bat of the season, drove in Bohm with a single up the middle to tie the score at one.
UTA took the lead back in the second. Zac Cook led off with a walk and moved to third on an infield single from Josh Minjarez. Easton Johnson's sacrifice fly put UTA up 2-1.
The Shockers again answered with a two-out rally in the second. With two outs,
Jordan Boyer doubled down the third base line and scored on a single from
Travis Young to tie the score at two.
Vickers homered to left field with two outs in the third to give the Shockers their first lead at 3-2.
WSU broke it open with six runs in the fourth.
Jacob Katzfey led off with a double and
Gunnar Troutwine singled to put runners on the corners.
Jordan Boyer's single scored Katzfey and
Travis Young's bunt single loaded the bases.
Greyson Jenista hit his first career grand slam off the left field foul pole to put the Shockers up 8-2. After Bohm walked, O'Brien doubled and Bohm scored on a Maverick error to push the lead to 9-2.
UTA used a triple and RBI groundout to cut the Shocker lead to 9-3 in the sixth.
A two-run double by
Dayton Dugas in the sixth gave WSU an 11-3 lead and a Bohm sacrifice fly made the score 12-3 in the seventh.
The Shockers and Mavericks play game two of the series on Sat., March 10 at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series on Sun., March 11 at 1 p.m.
