Shockers Run-Rule Huskers in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Wichita State softball team run-ruled Nebraska, 8-0, to take the three-game series at Bowlin Stadium. Asea Webber led the Shocker offense, going 2-for-2 at the plate, with a two-run home run. Bailey Lange pitched five innings, only giving up two hits and striking out three.

Mackenzie Wright began the game with a leadoff single, Ryleigh Buck used a sac bunt to get her to second with Laurie Derrico reaching on an infield single. Paige Luellen, who had five hits through two games yesterday, continued her strong form at the plate with a double into right-center to get Wright home and giving the Shockers an early 1-0 lead.

Webber doubled into deep center field in the second but the Shockers couldn't get her around.

In the third Wright led off with another single before stealing second; the 47th of her career and the second in two days. Buck bunted for the second time to get Wright to third with both Luellen and Bingham drawing back-to-back walks to load the bases. Perrigan then tripled into left field for the second weekend in a row to get three around and pushing the lead to 4-0. In the next at-bat Webber crushed a two-run homer over the center field fence to make it 6-0.

An impressive defense effort by the Shockers kept the Huskers at bay in the third. Lange started it off with a looking strikeout, her third of the day. Buck ended it with a tough line out catch at third.

In the fifth, the Shocker bats continued to stay hot. Bingham drew a walk to lead off, Perrigan singled through the right to get two on base. Webber sacrifice bunted to move runners round with Cassidy Kelsheimer and Morgan Palmer both coming in to pinch run. Lange singled into right field to get both runners home and push the lead to 8-0.

Three ground-outs in the bottom of the inning gave the Shockers (9-8) the run-rule win with Lange getting the win in the circle (5-4).

Wichita State now looks to its home opener at Wilkins Stadium on Tuesday; a doubleheader with Arkansas beginning at 3:00 p.m.
