Five Home Runs Help Shockers Defeat Huskies

STORRS, Conn. – Behind five home runs and a seven-run sixth inning, the Wichita State softball team took down UConn, 11-3, to open the second week of conference play in The American.

Mackenzie Wright helped the Shocker bats by going 2-for-3 with four RBI while Bailey Lange pitched five innings, giving up one earned run and striking out seven including the 250th of her career.

Laurie Derrico drew a two-out walk in the top of the first but the Shockers couldn't capitalize. In the bottom half the Huskies singled to get on base with another single into right field getting the UConn batter home. Lange earned her 250th career strikeout to get the final out and end the inning.

She got her second and third of the game in the bottom half of the second with the Shockers finally getting their first hit of the day in the third on a Wright bunt. Wright then stole second, the 48th of her career, but a pop out kept the Shockers at bay. In the bottom of the third the Huskies added two more on an error and a double to get two on base with a single getting them home.

Madison Perrigan got the Shockers second hit of the day in the fifth with a base hit through the right side. Asea Webber followed up with the third in the next at-bat on an infield single to get two on base. Cassidy Kelsheimer replaced Perrigan to run at second with Morgan Palmer sacrifice bunting to move the runners around. Wright's sac fly into center field scored Kelsheimer. Bailee Nickerson then crushed a deep shot way over the left field fence for a two-run home run, her fifth of the season and fourth in five games, to tie the game at 3-3.

The second straight three-up, three-down for Lange kept the Huskies off the board before the Shockers took the lead in the sixth. Ryleigh Buck drew a one-out walk with Lange crushing a two-run home run to center field for a 5-3 Shockers lead; her third home run of the season. Webber and Palmer drew back-to-back walks with Wright knocking her first home run of 2018 over the right-center fence to push the lead to 8-3; Wright also hit 100 career RBI with the home run. The Shocker bats were still not done with Nickerson singling up the middle in the next at-bat with Derrico then hitting the fourth Shocker home run over center field to push the lead to 10-3.

Bailey Klitzke replaced Lange in the circle for the bottom half of the sixth, getting the first two batters swinging and the third with a line out to Wright at third.

In the seventh the Shockers got their fifth home run of the game, this time a solo shot by Buck over center field to push the lead to 11-3. This was the first time the Shockers have hit five home runs in a game since they hit six against Missouri State in April 2016. Klitzke followed up in the next at-bat with a single into right field with Perrigan following her with a deep double into left center. A foul out and two swinging strikeouts ended the Shocker at-bats.

Klitzke got the final three outs, the last swinging, to end the game and give the Shockers their first win in Storrs in history and move them to 19-12, 2-2 in The American. Lange got the win to move to 10-8 on the season with the Shockers set to face the Huskies tomorrow; first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
