Shockers Drop VCU to Claim Rice Invite Title

HOUSTON- Wichita State took down VCU, 4-0, to claim the 60th Texas Tamale Company Rice Invitational, Sunday afternoon at the Brown Tennis Center.
 
Wichita State puts its name in the record books at the Rice Invite, winning for the first time in program history. The Shockers participated twice before in 1989 and 1997. The Shockers now have a 3-4 record at the Invite.
 
With the win, WSU ends Rice's streak of 10-straight victories and the first team other than Rice to win since Oklahoma in 2007.

WSU collected wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (4-0), Rice (4-3), and VCU (4-0) to claim the title. 
 
DOUBLES
Wichita State used a rally from Haru Inoue and Murkel Dellien to take the doubles point from VCU. Eddie Stoica and Andrea Trapani won their fourth-straight as a duo, taking down Philip Mobius and Timo Zgraggen in flight three (6-1). The Rams got one back on court one where Vitor Lima and Javier Amantegui defeated Andrea Caligiana and Miroslav Herzan 6-2. Dellien and Frosa teamed up for the second time this season and rallied to take down Arvid Noren and Inigo Torre Martin 6-4 to go up on the Rams of VCU.
 
SINGLES
Wichita State used wins in flights one, three and four to secure the title from VCU. Inoue, who moved back to flight one, drubbed Lima in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to give WSU a 2-0 lead. Dellien continued his winning ways, dropping Amantegui 6-1, 6-2. Dellien improves to a team leading 13-5 in singles action. In flight four, Herzan rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the second set to win 7-5, and clinching the Texas Tamale Company Rice Invite for the Shockers.
 
Wichita State improves its record to 12-8 on the season, including five-straight wins.
 
UP NEXT: Wichita State travels to take on Denver University on Mar. 30 at 1 p.m. at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion in Denver.
